Mammography Technologist operates specialized X-ray equipment and performs various mammography related procedures including screenings and diagnostic studies. Develops and evaluates the film for technical quality such as density contrast, definition, and distortion. Being a Mammography Technologist creates and maintains patient records and files according to required procedure. Cleans and adjusts equipment as needed. Additionally, Mammography Technologist requires an associate degree or completion of a formal radiologic technology training program. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager. Requires American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)Diagnostic Mammography. Mammography Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of a Radiologist, performs Radiologic breast imaging procedures for the evaluation of pathological entities as ordered by a physician. Performs related functions according to department protocols. Utilizes independent judgment in determining appropriate radiographic techniques, positioning, and safety practices.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Explains examination procedure to patients and prepares patient for the examination. Reviews clinical data on requisition and performs appropriate examination.
- Obtains additional information about the patient medical history as necessary.
- Prepares procedure room and regularly replenishes stock such as linen and related supplies. Analyzes anatomical structure of patient, sets up equipment and performs the Radiologic procedure.
- Manually controls the equipment to obtain the proper diagnostic information from the area of the body being studied.
- Utilizes patient immobilization as needed.
- Performs all imaging procedures by demonstrating the principles of radiation protection: may involve shielding of patients, selection of appropriate equipment settings to reduction dose, using other ALARA techniques, etc.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required
- Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and the advanced registry in Mammography, ARRT (M) (or registry eligible)
- If registry eligible, registry must be obtained within 12 months of date of hire
- Failure to obtain registry within the designated time-frame will result in termination of the Mammography Tech position
- Must maintain the required hours of continued medical education
- Must meet all Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) criteria, as well as other regulatory agencies
