Major Gifts Manager manages and implements a philanthropic gift program to nurture and solicit relationships with corporate, institutional, and major donors. Develops a portfolio of existing and potential donors and a strategy to enhance and extend relationships to generate philanthropic revenue. Being a Major Gifts Manager organizes events and meetings with prospects to raise awareness of the organization's mission and highlight accomplishments and ongoing funding needs. Makes regular personal contact with key contributors to strengthen relations with the organization. Additionally, Major Gifts Manager oversees proposal preparation and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Major Gifts Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Major Gifts Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     SUMMARY
    This position is responsible for the management of individual donor engagement which includes the following groups:  Community Gifts, Leadership Society, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, and the supervision of staff assigned to manage these donor groups.  Develop, manage, and implement effective strategies and tactics to cultivate new relationships, increase donor engagement, and in turn increase financial contributions from strategic donor groups to United Way’s annual campaign.  Provide professional customer care to individual donors and volunteers, ensuring quality follow through and overall satisfaction.  This position reports to the Vice President, Resource Development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    Include the following, but are not limited to:

    DIVISON MANAGEMENT
    • Monitor staff performance to strategic goals/expectations and provide timely coaching & feedback.
    • Assist staff in identifying and managing top prospects within their assigned portfolios.
    • Manage staff projects and committees as assigned as well as special assignments required by other divisions.
    • Remain current by having up-to-date knowledge of internal support processes.
    • Provide regular and timely communication with Management Team, cabinet leadership, ambassadors, and assigned volunteers.
    • Staff projects and committees as assigned, as well as special assignments with other divisions as required by Vice President – Resource Development.
    • Working closely with staff to oversee management and production of the annual leadership society donor recognition publication process and ensure that donor and company information is accurate for over 5,000 names as well as monthly Leadership Newsletter.
    • Lead a cross-departmental work group to ensure that all individual solicitations are timely and appropriate.
    • Manage the acknowledgement process of individual donors so that all thank you correspondence is thoughtful, timely and accurate.
    • Execute multi-year gift procurement strategy aligned with United Way’s Key Initiatives
    • Refocus public perception of United Way from a three-month campaign to a year-round community impact leader in communications and interactions with customers.

    EXPECTED OUTCOMES
    Increase the contribution and engagement level of individuals within the above donor segments.  Integrate all aspects of United Way’s development strategy in work plans.  Demonstrate effective division leadership.  Effectively communicate United Way’s value add to all constituents.

    TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
    • Manage portfolio of Jane Bradley Pettit Society members, Tocqueville Donors, and Prospects.
    • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors ($10,000 ) inside and outside the workplace.
    • Design the strategy to recruit, cultivate and/or steward major gifts donors and qualified prospects by using marketing materials, working with other Resource Development staff, planning events and other engagement opportunities.
    • Work collaboratively with Resource Development Account Managers to identify major gifts prospects from the Workplace Campaign.
    • Work closely with Tocqueville Society Cabinet members.
    • Oversee the Major Gifts Communications calendar and timeline, as well as other key communication to donors from United Way leadership.

    EXPECTED OUTCOMES
    Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective Tocqueville Society members providing excellent customer service.
    Effectively communicate United Way’s value-add to all constituents.  Increase revenue from major donor base.

    PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
    • Help to identify planned giving prospects and coordinate their solicitation.
    • Working closely with Planned Giving lead, develop effective planned giving strategies as well as identify opportunities to promote unique planned giving opportunities and transformational gift vehicles.
    • Help to develop process for maintaining relationships with current Legacy Society Members including annual touch points. 

    EXPECTED OUTCOMES
    Implementation of strategies to demonstrate growth of the overall Planned Giving program by building and maintaining relationships with current and prospective Planned Giving prospects by providing excellent customer service.

    PERFORMANCE STANDARD 
    All United Way information is held confidential.  There is no disclosure of any internal United Way strategic information, or volunteer, vendor and donor information.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    Manage/supervise staff responsible for the management of the following divisions: Community Gifts, Leadership Society, Major Gifts and Planned Giving. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring or effectively recommending hiring, and training support staff; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and coaching; effectively recommend performance-based increases; discipline employees; handling and resolving complaints and employee relations problems.  
    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Undergraduate degree related to marketing, sales, management or business, human services, or philanthropy
    from a four-year college or university and 7 years fundraising or related experience
    • Understanding of marketing, sales or fundraising and high touch customer service roles, as well as general supervisory experience.
    • Understanding of non-profits, human services, and philanthropy.

    Ability to apply database management software concepts to practical situations.  Proficient with computer applications such as MS Office, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, ANDAR, and Internet desired.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS 
    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    REASONING 
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
