Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts or components for tools or machines by operating mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Being a Machinist selects and operates the appropriate tools to cut, shape, or finish metal, plastic, or composite material. Sets up, services, and maintains equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation. Additionally, Machinist utilizes precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy and quality of machined parts. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units as necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Machinist works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.   • Shipyard Staffing has a job opportunity for an inside machinist in Ketchikan Alaska. We are looking for someone to fill a 90 day temp to permanent position with our client in Alaska. Our Preferred candidate is someone currently living in the local area, but we are willing to look at candidates who are willing or want to relocate. Moving assistance may be available. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES. 

    Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or multi-craft work crew.
    • Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures. 
    • Consistently exceeds Journey Level criteria. 
    • Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
    • According to manufacturers' specifications, disassembles and inspects for wear, damage, and possible malfunction of ships mechanical equipment aboard vessel and in shop, including but not limited to gas, diesel, and steam engines, electrical motors and accessories including valving, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment. 
    • Opens and inspects/repair rudders and shafting which includes bearings and surfaces. 
    • Under supervision, removes and installs ship's propellers and shafts, using air and electrical chain falls and various other equipment. 
    • Repairs and inspects pumps and mechanical seals. 
    • Repairs and inspects rudder, wheel, and shafting. 
    • Performs basic winch and windless repairs -- steam and hydraulic. 
    • Basic repair of evaporators. 
    • Tubing assembly and testing of condensers and heat exchanger. 
    • Diesel engine theory and repairs. 
    • Works from ship specifications, work orders, and applicable working drawings and blueprints. 
    • Researches and suggests written comprehensive condition found reports (CFRs). 
    • Responsible for being conversant in all quality assurance requirements. 
    Other duties may be assigned.

    ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    Incumbent performs similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises. 

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

    • Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group. 
    • Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply. 
    • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. 
    • Ability to do percentages, metric and decimal conversions, multiply fractions and decimals as required for use in measurements,. 
    • Propulsion basics including variable pitch props. 
    • Pumps - types and mechanical seals. 
    • Steam systems. 
    • Underwater hull machinery, including bearings. 
    • Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. 
    • Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and lube oil, and cooling. 

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

    High school or GED or equivalent combination of 6-10years of education and directly applicable work and/or proven skills in the trade. Journey Level 1 Ship Repair Some knowledge of several skills with more advanced knowledge of 1 primary skill and possess at least 1 certification (hours in skilled trade & demonstrated proficiency). Requires general supervision during performance of primary skill, but is able to perform job duties of A-1 through A-3 with little or no supervision. 

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: 

    Four-hour fire watch certification, must be obtained within 30 days of hire. HAZWOPER-First Responder Awareness Level 

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Sitting, Standing, Walking, Crouching, Kneeling/Crawling, Stooping, Twisting, Climbing, Balancing, Leg/Foot Use (To repetitively operate machine controls), Reaching, Handling/Grasping, Fingering/Feeling, Pushing/Pulling and Lifting/Carrying. Talking, Hearing, Vision, Near Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 inches or less), Far Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 feet of more), Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision to judge distance/ spatial relationships), Color Vision (if required to distinguish colors for job performance or safety), Field of Vision (if required to observe a large field of vision while keeping eye fixed on a given point for job performance or safety), and Smell. 

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

    • Works indoors: Frequently- Works indoors exposed to temperature variances, vibrations, humidity, chemicals, dust and noise. 
    • Works outdoors: Frequently- Works on shipboard exposed to typical outdoor weather. 
    • Safety equipment required: Wears welding helmet, long pants, long sleeved shirt, eye protection, hearing protection, respirator, hard hat, and leather shoes, and other equipment as required/needed. • Other Exposures: May be exposed to smoke, acids, degreasing cleaners, fumes, free silica, asbestos, dust, weld flash, paints, solvents, oil and grease. 
    • Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses: grinders, hand/power tools, air torches, welding machines, come-a-long, chainfall, hammer, wedges, wire feeders, compressed gas tanks, plate shears, automatic multi-head burning machine, hydraulic press and punch, large and small plate rolls, carbon saw, large surface slab for securing fabrication, overhead and jib cranes and rigging, drill presses and a complete range of hand tools. 
    • Required hygiene standards: Per company standards.
