MRI Technologist operates a magnetic resonance scanner to obtain images used in the diagnosis and treatment of patient pathologies. Uses knowledge of imaging techniques and cross-sectional anatomy to create high quality images for interpretation by radiologists and other medical professionals. Being an MRI Technologist modifies technical settings and adjusts scanning parameters to enhance images and minimize unnecessary exposure. Performs routine inspections and maintenance on scanner and archives imaging data. Additionally, MRI Technologist typically requires an associate degree in a related area. Requires ARRT certification. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager. The MRI Technologist works under moderate supervision. This role reviews patient history and physician's orders. Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
When ordered, prepares and administers contrast media and/or medications within scope of practice.
Monitors patient condition continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate.
Prepares equipment and supplies.
Selects appropriate exposure factors and imaging parameters.
Positions patient and performs imaging procedure(s). Analyzes results and identifies issues with the quality of imaging results.
Takes appropriate action to resolve image quality issues, including repositioning patient and repeating procedure. Enters, transmits, and reports scan results.
Assesses MRI hazards. Maintains a safe MRI environment for patients, families, and peers by screening all patients for all non compatible devices (ex. metal, earrings, implants, etc.)
Minimum education
Associate's degree preferred.
Graduate of a program in discipline required.
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) current upon hire.
New hires will have ninety (90) days from date of hire to obtain American Heart Association certifications. Notwithstanding this 'grace period' for obtaining American Heart Association certifications, employees are not excused from being current in any and all existing certifications that are required for their position as outlined in the position job description.
Licenses:
New Mexico State Radiologic Technologist Certificate (MRT) and
ARRT certified/registered in MRI or ARMRIT certification
