Physical Planning, Development & Operations manages and oversees all University activities and services related to capital planning & space management, physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes an operating budget of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio in excess of $350 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation

JOB SUMMARY
Under General direction of Physical Plant Structural Trades Superintendent, incumbent shall perform duties of a Journeyman Level Locksmith, responsible for brass and electronic key systems, entry systems, design, installation, and maintenance. Provide estimates and consultation on keying and entry hardware systems.
Perform other related duties, as assigned by Structural Trades Superintendent.

Salary Information: Step 1.0 $41.45/hourly. After successfully completing a 6 month probation period, the candidate will receive Step 2.0 $46.07/hourly.

JOB DUTIES
65% Operations and maintenance

Performs a full range of journey and master level locksmith functions necessary for the planning, construction, installation, inspection, maintenance and support of complex multi-level master key systems for large multi-user building(s) typical to the size of a large university or institutional/ industrial establishment.

Performs a variety of journey and master level locksmith trade functions necessary for the planning, construction, installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of door systems and commercial grade door security hardware systems including but not limited to: all types of door hinge and pivoting mechanisms; many types of door security controls such as mortise, rim and concealed vertical rod panic devices, mortise locks, cylindrical locksets, electronic locking controls that utilize code or card entry applications; closing mechanisms such as surface closers, overhead concealed devices, concealed in the floor closing devices, automatic door openers/closers; miscellaneous security hardware such as electro-magnetic door hold open devices, safes and office furniture.
15% Keys and Records Maintenance

Cuts and stamps keys; prepare keying schedules indicating all keying combinations; update and maintain key records and key filing system for future duplication of keys using written and computer database programs.
10% Core Function: Liaison
-
Maintains liaison with campus individuals and units regarding keying requirements as they relate to modification or security issues. Advises building users/planners as necessary regarding hardware specifications for new and remodel projects; estimate hardware costs for remodel and new construction projects. Effectively employs good interpersonal skills when interacting with members of the campus community.
10% Shop Maintenance

Maintains and repairs tools and equipment used in Lock Shop; orders and maintains parts and stock inventories sufficient for operation through normal purchasing procedure and direct contact with vendors; inspects materials received to ensure they meet specifications and that they are in good working order.

Performs safety inspections on tools and equipment used. Attends safety and training classes and performs job related tasks in a safe manner. Follows all product and University-specific safety procedures when using tools and equipment. Writes and maintains a daily/weekly timesheet. Helps other Physical Plant mechanics and Supervisor maintain inventory of shop materials, supplies and tools by informing them of specific needs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Experience equal to qualification of Journeyman Locksmith.

Skill and ability in the use of computers and computer programs such as email, Excel and Word.

Training in the planning, construction, installation, inspection, maintenance and support of complex, multi-level master key systems for large multi-user building(s) typical to the size of a large university or institutional/ industrial establishment.

Ability to design, utilize and maintain complex master key systems using various computer programs.
-
Experience and ability to read and understand construction documents, building specifications and blueprints.
-
Demonstrated ability to install and maintain all type of doors and hardware.
-
Knowledge of office furniture locks and hardware.
-
Experience and skill in the function, use and safe operation of tools in the locksmith trade.

Skill and ability in the use of computers and computer programs such as email, Excel and Word. Ability to learn Enterprise Asset Management System (Famis) work order tracking program, "key bitting" software programs and UCSC electronic purchasing tools.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, fostering teamwork by maintaining a cooperative atmosphere and effective working relationships with a diverse population from various cultural backgrounds.
