    PURPOSE:

    Under the general supervision of Associate Director of Maintenance and Operations and day-to-day work direction of the Lead Locksmith, the Locksmith performs the full range of skilled journey-level locksmith work. The Locksmith assist in the development of master key systems and the design of special security devices and are independently responsible for the implementation and maintenance of these programs. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Responds to routine maintenance and service requests; Install, maintain, repair and adjust all types of locks and their components for campus buildings, rooms, furniture and vehicles; maintain and repair automatic door openers, door closing units, and control gates; service and maintain safes; installation, repair, remodel and maintenance of manual and automated locks, locking systems and security devices, as well as, low voltage computerized access control systems; maintain and repair door openers, closers and hardware; cuts keys, programs cards/fobs and issues same to customers or forwards to the Campus Service Center for issuance; completion of preventative maintenance work orders for campus buildings: service all doors, hardware, and inspect electronics for function
    • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs access control, security systems, automatic door openers, door-closing units, control gates, safes and computerized access control systems; tests related electrical and information technology components related to campus card access system; implement, troubleshoot, repair and program computerized access control systems; troubleshoot and maintain security systems including those interfacing with locking and other building systems
    • Uses computerized maintenance systems, including preventive maintenance systems to ensure maintenance department objectives are met.; maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed on various buildings, equipment and service information using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; keeps detailed records of work finished; estimate cost, time and materials for locksmith projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of a locksmith shop; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems
    • Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintain a safe and clean work environment.

    Other Functions:

    Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the locksmith trade, including complex access and control systems; a thorough knowledge of all types of locks, fastening devices and related hardware; working knowledge of electrical locking and security systems and devices; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state codes pertaining to the locksmith trade including those related to fire exits, door hardware and fastening devices.

    Abilities: Must be able to perform journey-level locksmith work; use features of applicable access control systems; read, interpret and work from shop blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; maintain computerized inventory and master locking systems records; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith's apprenticeship program.

    SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

    Hold a license or certification as a locksmith and is required to successfully complete a background check.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Two or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included responsibilities and training in master key systems.

    Specific knowledge of Simplex Fire, RPS Bosch Alarm Systems, and Genetec/HDI access and security systems; experience with work management database software, such as Limble; experience working and able to communicate effectively with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of technical operations of the job; able to solve a problem in a collaborative team environment.

    • This position will have a duty to report to the Campus Title IX Officer information pertaining to victims of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking as required by CSU Executive Order 1095.
    • This position has been designated as a sensitive position with responsibility for the care, safety and security of people (including children and minors), animals, and CSU property; responsibility or access/possession of building master or sub-master keys for building access; access to and responsibility for detailed personal identifiable Level 1 confidential information about students, faculty, staff or alumni that is protected, personal or sensitive as defined in the CSU Information Security Data Classification Standards), and responsibility for operating commercial vehicles, machinery or equipment that could pose environmental hazards or cause injury, illness or death.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Driving Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
    • Occasional evenings and/or weekend work may be required.

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

    Required to work indoors and outdoors in University buildings and grounds year-round, including inclement weather. Includes working in the presence of loud noise, vibration, dark and/or confined spaces, moving mechanical parts, automobile exhaust, dust, chemical and paint fumes. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, and risk of being exposed to fire and electrical shock. Will require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Position requires full range of motion to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to, lifting and moving items in excess of 50 pounds (moving up to 100 pounds is required rarely). This position also requires sitting, standing, bending, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, applying force, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires use of a video display terminal. Standard vision requirements with/without corrective aides: Close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral; Depth Perception; Ability to adjust focus. Requires travel between campus offices and to off-campus locations.
