Being a Locksmith may install or maintain emergency exit systems and electronic access equipment and devices. May design new key or lock systems for an organization. Additionally, Locksmith maintains a thorough records of changes and additions to an organization's key systems. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Locksmith works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Supervision

    Works under the direct supervision of a department manager.  

    Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees and temporary employees.


    Work Schedule
    40 Hours/Week, 12 Months/Year
    Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.


    • Performs skilled locksmith work, including maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction of District buildings locks, exit hardware systems, and equipment in accordance with building, fireand safety codes and regulationscontacts vendors as needed.

    • Creates new and duplicate keys using code cutting machines and knowledge of lock systems to meet District needs while preserving the integrity of the District's master key system, including maintaining thorough records of all locks and issued keys and keycards.

    • Installs, maintains, repairs, replaces, rekeys, and recombinates common locks and safes to ensure security.

    • Installs, repairs, programs and maintains electronic locks, automatic doors, door closers, panic bars, emergency opening and alarm equipment, and other exit hardware.

    • Performs preventive maintenance on locks and exit hardware systems.

    • Responds to work orders and locksmith emergencies; inspects and troubleshoots systems to diagnose problems and performs repairs. Prioritizes jobs and determines project timelines.

    • Provides recommendations on the design and installation olocks, exit hardware and security systems for new construction and existing facilitiessketches layouts based on blueprints, plans, and specifications.

    • Maintains inventory of locksmith supplies, equipment, and toolsestimates labormaterials, and equipment needed for assigned worksubmits requisitions for orders.

    • Prepares reports and maintains records of work performed and materials used.

    • Cleansmaintainssecures and organizes work areas, tools, and equipmentperforms minor repairs on tools and equipment.

    • Operates vehicle (s) to transport tools, equipment, and materials.

    • May provide work direction to lower-level employees and/or temporary employees.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties. 

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship or specialized locksmith training program. 

    Four (4) years of skilled work in the locksmith trade.

    Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:

    • Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.

    Knowledge of:

    • Basic locksmith theory, including the principlesmethods, materials, tools and equipment used in the locksmith trade.

    • Master key systems and key coding techniques, including key code conversion software.

    • Common types of locks; appropriate use of each type; and methods for resetting, repairing, and rekeying them.

    • Operation, installation, maintenance, and programming of electronic locking devices and card access systems.

    • Installation, maintenance, and use of commercial door hardware including panic bars, alarms, closers, and other exit hardware.

    • Basic carpentry concepts, practices, methods, and techniques.

    • Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in the locksmith and access control trade including code cutting machines, key duplicators, key decoders, key extractors, plug followers, lock picks, and drills.

    • Safe practices for handling electricity including personal protective equipment and lockout and tagout procedures to ensure circuits are de-energized before work is performed.

    • Protection and safety requirements applicable to working with power equipment and hazardous or toxic material.

    • Laws, regulations, standards, and requirements applicable to areas of assignment.  

    • Office practices and procedures, including the use of personal computers and standard business software.

    • Principles and practices of customer service. 

    • Standard formats for business letters and other communications.

    • Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work.

    • Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

    • Basic arithmetic. 

    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

    • Record keeping and filing techniques and practices.


    Ability to:

    • Perform skilled locksmith system installations, repairs, and maintenance.

    • Design and install locksmith systems including reading and interpreting sketches of layouts based on blueprints, plans, and specifications.

    • Identify defects and problems in locksmith systems and test equipment and materials.

    • Estimate costs, labor, and materials required for locksmith systems repairs and maintenance

    • Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure safety and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

    • Prepare and maintain thorough and accurate records.

    • Use and operate various vehicles, tools and equipment applicable to the locksmith trade.

    • Monitor and maintain inventory.

    • Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.

    • Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).

    • Prepare correspondence and other documents using standard business formats.

    • Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately within established deadlines.

    • Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.

    • Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.

    • Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.

    • Work and perform duties independently.

    • Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.

    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    • Work typically occurs in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to varied weather conditions, chemicals and fumes/odors, surfaces, high elevations, tight spaces, vibrations, high voltages and occasional unsanitary conditions

    Salary 
    The Locksmith classification salary range is currently range 40.
    Starting salary is from $6,104.18 to $6,729.86 per month depending upon education and experience.  Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
