Job Description:
Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia. Campuses are located in Franklin and Suffolk. There also is a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates In transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training for businesses and industries; special interest classes for the community; and summer classes for youth through the Regional Workforce Development Center. A dual enrollment program for high school students, online courses, and developmental studies classes are available at the college as well.
Reporting to the Financial Aid Coordinator, the primary goals of the Financial Aid Loan Assistant are to serve as backup to the Financial Aid Loan Officer, providing financial literacy and loan counseling outreach to current students. In addition, this employee will coordinate the Work-Study program for Franklin Campus, including maintaining accurate time records and onboarding student employees. The incumbent will perform high-level financial aid computer operations related to helping students maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress; revise aid for enrollment changes; and work closely with Business Office to ensure the timely disbursement of all financial aid funds. On a daily basis, this employee will guide students and parents through completing FAFSA forms and submitting follow-up documents. This employee will answer emails and phone calls; scan and link documents in an electronic filing system; and connect students who are struggling with appropriate support to help them succeed. Standard office equipment will be used. As needed, the incumbent will participate in community workshops for student and parents, as well as liaison with high school career coaches. The position will require occasional evening and weekend hours.
This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
-Customer service experience.
-Experience keeping meticulous confidential records.
-Experience working with word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g. MS Office Suite).
-Demonstrated ability to establish goals and priorities and make decisions based on established business processes.
-Demonstrated ability to work and make decisions under pressure, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, while maintaining composure.
-Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, adapting quickly and easily to competing deadlines.
-Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
-Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including public speaking.
-Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed to assist students during busy peak periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Knowledge of and skills with using PeopleSoft Student Information System (SIS).
-Familiarity with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
-Experience working with federal and state financial aid programs, Direct Loans in particular.
-Customer service or advising experience in a higher education setting.
