Lineman constructs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground transmission lines. Performs site preparation tasks, including digging holes or trenches, installing anchors, climbing poles, and using equipment like digger derricks, aerial lifts, pulling and tensioning equipment, forklifts, and dump trucks. Being a Lineman installs wire and cable. Follows all safety regulations and procedures. Additionally, Lineman work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a valid Driver's License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Lineman works under moderate supervision. The Apprentice Lineman/Lineman will help in construction and removal of overhead and underground electrical lines, and fiber utility lines. Also, assist in maintaining both the electrical utility and fiber utility system, which includes restoration of power outages. Role and Responsibilities
Qualifications and Education Requirements
High School diploma or GED (General Equivalency Diploma) required. Any additional electrical courses desired. Completed REC Apprentice Lineman Development Program or equivalent. Electrical or utility work experience preferred.
The ideal candidate understands REC's system maps, staking sheets, and other work order procedures required of this job. Must be familiar with functions and services of all other departments of the Coop. Must know Coop safety rules. Must have an effective knowledge of REC construction specifications and National Electric Safety Code requirements pertaining to line construction. Must keep informed of all Coops operating policies. Must possess basic computer skills, to include a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including, but not limited to: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint as required by job responsibilities.
Candidate must be able to climb and perform assigned duties under normal conditions. Operates two-way radio equipment effectively. Operates all specialized equipment used in Operations Department (example cable and fault locators). Must be proficient in patrol of lines and rights of way and accurately report findings. Must be able to operate all equipment pertaining to line work. Demonstrates ability to perform first aid. Must maintain a valid commercial driver’s license. Perform other duties as assigned.
Must work in all types of weather conditions when necessary. Must be willing to work overtime as required, sometimes extremely long hours with little rest. Normal workweek will be 4-10 hour days. Conditions also include noisy conditions, which may require hearing protection equipment. Must be able to perform hard physical labor when necessary including heavy lifting.
