Life Underwriting Director directs and oversees the life insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Life Underwriting Director provides coaching to underwriters and assists on more complex applications. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Additionally, Life Underwriting Director typically requires Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification or Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation. Typically reports to top management. The Life Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Life Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     This role provides an exciting and unique opportunity to build out a brand-new underwriting segment focusing on Life Sciences. Responsible for development of strategy to enter Life Sciences industry.  Builds and directs a national underwriting organization through effective risk selection, Agent/Broker relationships, portfolio management/mix of business, cat exposure management, and strategic leadership. Manages a production underwriter model that values discipline, profitable growth, ease of doing business, and superior distribution management.

      

    Responsibilities:

    1. Drives the development of challenging business plans reflective of the competitive environment, inclusive of a plan for entry and expansion into Life Sciences space and; aggressively monitors results adjusting strategies and tactics to maximize profit while balancing growth.  
    2. Builds a high-performing underwriting organization through effective selection, development, and employee engagement; drives the clarity of business strategies/operating objectives and creates alignment.
    3. Partners collaboratively with the Office of Underwriting to develop Life Sciences segment guidelines for all lines of business
    4. Collaborates internally as necessary to drive strategy and plan for product development for Life Sciences segment
    5. Ensures the organization develops and maintains successful relationships with agents and brokers by providing stewardship with service partners, including initial setup of service commitments, and regular visits.
    6. Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for division through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
    7. Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis.  Includes rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews.
    8. Promotes an environment of continuous improvement principles to improve customer relationships, quality and work processes.
    9. Provides overall direction for underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for area of responsibility.
    10. Contributes to the development of strategic marketing initiatives.  Enhances and maintains Liberty presence with the brokerage community by solidifying key relationships.
    Qualifications
    • Knowledge of commercial property & casualty products; insurance operations; finance and actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; reinsurance; account management; underwriting; producer management; and product development.
    • Skills required include analyzing and problem solving; decision making, building relationships; courage; innovation; communicating effectively, engaging and motivating people; negotiation; influencing others; focusing on service; managing and improving processes; executing well; planning and organizing work.
    •  Other capabilities required include openness to new experiences, calmness under pressure, conscientiousness and humility as normally acquired through an advanced degree or equivalent training.
    • 10 or more years of relevant experience, several of which should be in an underwriting operations management capacity.
