TTILE: Regional Library Director, Beaufort Hyde Martin Regional Library
The Beaufort Hyde Martin Regional Library System is seeking an innovative, visionary, and experienced Director to manage eight rural branches ranging from Williamston to Ocracoke Island.
SALARY: $64,000-$68,890. This position comes with a benefits package including paid health insurance, NC Orbit Retirement, USAble Life Insurance, paid sick time, paid vacation time, and paid holidays.
COMMUNITY: The Headquarters’ library is strategically located in Washington, NC near the center of North Carolina’s “Inner Banks” on the beautiful Pamlico River. The town was established in 1776 and was the first city in America to be named for our first president. Washington is fewer than100 miles from the Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast, and Raleigh. The area served by BHM has a very affordable cost of living, a rich history, scenic waterfronts, great restaurants, art galleries, and intriguing antique stores.
DUTIES: The Regional Director is the executive officer responsible for the administration, planning, and daily operation of the three-county library system and its eight member libraries. The Director's responsibilities include fiscal management, personnel management, and professional library work. The Director also represents the library to the community and works closely with town and county administrators, elected officials, and other agencies. The director reports directly to the Board of Trustees and supervises the Branch Managers and the Regional Headquarters staff. During the past few years BHM has received several technology grants to improve services including hot spots, Homework Gap grants, and Edge Technology grants.
The Director is responsible for ensuring that the personnel, technology, and facilities meet the needs of the various communities. The Director determines the financial requirements of the regional system and manages the budget for eight libraries in three counties.
Illustrative examples of work include creating and presenting the library’s annual budget, hiring and developing staff, managing the library’s print and online collection development, and implementing strategic planning for the library including seeking grant and alternative funding. Other duties include performing periodic assessment of community needs, identifying emerging technology and library trends, and building strong relationships with appropriate governmental agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited graduate school, North Carolina Library Certification within one year of employment, a minimum of five years professional library experience, with at least three years of administrative or supervisory responsibility
ADDITIONAL QUALITIES: A passion for serving communities, strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse groups, the ability to lead and motivate others, flexibility, and experience adapting to and initiating organizational change; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library management. Considerable financial knowledge and experience with creating, modifying, and adhering to a budget.
