Requires master's of library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Additionally, Library Services Director typically reports to top management. The Library Services Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Library Services Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • The Novi Public Library (NPL) is a vibrant, fast-paced, class six library located within Oakland County. The Library was awarded the "Community Builder Award" in 2021 from the Novi Chamber of Commerce for its innovative approach to reaching its community by introducing the first self-service kiosk in Michigan, called Lakeshore Lending Library. NPL proudly serves a diverse community with a population of 65,000 . This position is being reinstituted in the organization after many years. With a new Strategic Plan (2023 - 2028) in place and growing needs from the Novi community for services, outreach, programming and collections, the Administrative Team is looking for an additional leader to meet those expectations and build relationships.


    PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Manages Library and building operations in the absence of the Director; responds to emergencies and provides support, as needed; acts quickly, exercising good judgment.
    2. Directly supervises: Head of Information Services, Communications Manager and oversees the library's café partnership with our local school district. Works collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Building Operations and Head of Information Technology to meet the facility and technology needs as it relates to public services.
    3. Has state-of-the-art knowledge of the Library and its departments; provides day-to-day management of the Library and departments including supervision, interacting with the public, evaluating, training, hiring, scheduling, emergency preparedness, budgeting and recommending department and Library needs.
    4. Works as a member of the Management Team to create, interpret, update and communicate library policies and procedures in conjunction with the Library's Mission, Vision, Values and goals set forth in the Strategic Plan.
    5. Leads the Library's new Strategic Planning initiatives; serves as a face for the Library; engages in outreach and events in the Novi community; participates in and manages staff on various library, professional and community committees and projects as assigned.

    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Oversees the Information Services Department management of all collection (digital resources, periodicals, etc.) development duties with a budget of approximately $500,000 annually; ensures selection, ordering, budgeting, weeding, promotion/marketing is done in an efficient and cost effective manner; oversees the exploration of new and improved collections based on trends and community needs; manages community surveys related to public service needs.
    2. Fosters a culture of customer service excellence. Is an example of positivity and collaboration with staff and the public; works closely with staff to create a culture of learning, creativity, inclusivity and fun for the Novi community.
    3. Works directly with the Director to investigate and respond to material challenges; utilizing the library's Collection Development Policy and Reconsideration Form as guides to inform the Library Board of Trustees, staff and community as needed.
    4. Manages and executes contracts related to Information Services, Marketing and Public Relations and café services in collaboration with the Information Services Department Head and the Communications Manager; oversees space needs for the youth, teen and adult public service areas as it relates to usage; executes furniture and space renovations in cooperation with vendors.
    5. Plans for emerging technologies for public use in collaboration with the Information Technology Department while demonstrating continuous efforts to improve public operations; collaborates with the Information Technology Department and iCube Makerspace committee to ensure adequate staffing, training and technology for public programming needs.
    6. Provides expertise for software and hardware needs in the Information Services Department as it pertains to staff productivity, training and public usage; oversees the investigation of new technologies, processes and new uses for technology. Oversees staff training opportunities to ensure all staff have the tools and knowledge to assist library users.
    7. Ensures building safety, accessibility and security at opening and closing; writes detailed, clear and concise incidents reports, obtaining case numbers in the event of public safety involvement.
    8. Works positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish library and department goals.
    9. Seeks professional continuing education, both organized and casual, with a commitment to new technology and building related needs in order for services to remain current and appropriate for staff and guests.
    10. Communicates effectively with guests, co-workers and professional colleagues.
    11. Represents the Library in various local business, consortium and statewide activities.
    12. Performs other duties as assigned.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Master's Degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited school.
    2. Four or more years of management experience including two years of direct supervisory experience with professional librarian staff.
    3. Knowledge of adult, teen and youth literature.
    4. Demonstrated experience with Strategic Planning, concentrating on community and staff engagement, development and execution.
    5. Demonstrated experience with analyzing data for effective decision making as it relates to budgets and collection development.
    6. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with public use technologies in libraries, including but not limited to computer reservation software, meeting room reservation software, public printing and makerspace technologies.
    7. Dedicated to public service and providing positive customer service; enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable.
    8. Values diversity in the workplace and in the community; ability to work with guests of varied backgrounds, ages and abilities.
    9. Strong obligation to confidentiality.
    10. Punctuality and dependability.
    11. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    12. Proficient in MS Office, Internet browsers and databases, and other computer related technology.
    13. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
    14. Ability to speak multiple languages helpful.
    15. May require a valid Michigan driver's license based on assignment.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    1. Physical mobility, vision, hearing, and manual dexterity essential.
    2. Maintain physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, bending, and / or walking for extended periods of time; stooping; crouching; reaching; carrying books or boxes of books; pushing book carts, seeing, keyboarding; using the telephone; lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull with wheeled cart up to 500 pounds, operating assigned equipment; picking up litter; spreading ice melt.
    3. Evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are required.

    Salary:

    $70,283 - $98,404 depending on qualifications


    Benefits:

    This position offers medical, dental and life insurance, as well as a retirement plan and time benefits. The retirement plan is a Defined Contribution plan, with employees contributing 3% and the City of Novi contributing 9% (increasing from 6%, effective July 1, 2024). Time Benefits are earned beginning on the date of hire and include personal business time (6 days annually), sick time (1 day each month), Vacation time (7 hours per month to start, increases based on years of service) and 12 paid Holidays per year.


    Hours:

    Forty (40) hours per week, includes days/evenings, weekends (management rotation of every 4-5 weeks).
