  • Indiana University Northwest invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of Library Services. The successful candidate will have experience in academic library administration, collaborative leadership skills, an understanding and vision of the academic library as a space (both physical and virtual) that supports all efforts toward student success; student and faculty research and creative activities; community engagement; and diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is a 12-month faculty appointment beginning July 1, 2024 (start date is negotiable) reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Rank will be at the associate or full faculty rank, and the successful candidate must be eligible for tenure. As this is a faculty position, the successful candidate must demonstrate a history of research/creative activity productivity, and a commitment to continue these efforts. The salary will be commensurate with experience and education.

    The John W. Anderson Library and Information Commons provides access to multiple information sources and services in support of student learning and success, faculty and student research, community engagement and the campus’s efforts to address diversity, equity, and inclusion. The library houses a physical collection of 160,300 books, bound serials, maps, audiobooks, and visual media. The library has 200,000 government publications. Students and faculty have access to 555 abstract or full-text journal databases, an integrated, online catalog of all IU libraries, online catalogs of local public and university libraries, 139,000 e-journals, 1,525,200 e-books and specialty resources like online encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographical sources, and statistical databases. Special purpose areas include the Calumet Regional Archives, a Federal Government Depository Collection, the Community Grants Information Collection (Foundation Center Directory Online), and IU Scholar Works.

    Through the IU Northwest Library, students have access to the 7 million volumes and 25 million other materials available from IU libraries. Books and journal articles can be obtained quickly for students and faculty through the IU Northwest Library Interlibrary Loan Office.

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    · Manage all aspects of library administration, including a complex budget, accounts, operations, library collections and archives.

    · Practice and promote inclusive hiring and personnel procedures to ensure diversity in the hiring of faculty, staff, and student workers, and to create a safe and welcoming environment for all library employees and users.

    · Evaluate all library faculty and staff employees.

    · Lead library strategic planning in the context of campus and university strategic plans; facilitate progress toward strategic goals.

    · While working with University Information Technology Services, facilitate planning of existing, new, and emerging technologies for the library with the potential to transform library services, scholarly teaching and research, and community engagement.

    · Work collaboratively with all campus constituents to facilitate activities, events, marketing, and social media strategies to build awareness and usage of library resources, collections, and spaces.

    · Practice continuous assessment and improvement strategies in all functions of the library including library faculty and staff, programs, services, and collections.

    · Ensure that library resources reflect the pedagogical, curricular, research, community engagement, and DEIJ pillars of the campus strategic plan.

    · Balance providing effective library services: a) to be student centered for student success, b) faculty focused for research and scholarship, and c) community engaged for service to the Northwest Indiana region, the state of Indiana and the nation.

    · Represent and advocate for the library on academic, administrative, and professional committees and councils at campus, university, state, national and international levels, as appropriate.

    · Collaborate with the Offices of Development and Grants to seek external funding in the form of grants and gifts to support library and archival initiatives.

    · Collaborate with relevant campus partners and participate in and support all student success initiatives planned for the library facility.

    · Engage in professional service activities for the campus, library profession, and in community engagement.

    · Delegate effective supervision of the library when absent.

    Required Qualifications:

    · American Library Association Accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences

    · A record of scholarly and professional achievement appropriate for tenure at IU Northwest (at Associate or Full Librarian rank)

    · Three (3) years progressively responsible administrative experience managing an academic library, or a significant library unit or program including budget and personnel management

    · A record of initiative and achievement in developing programs and services

    · Knowledge of and experience with library acquisitions, collections development, and (de-) selection of library materials

    · Knowledge of library information technology such as library webpage design, integrated library systems, adaptive technology software and social media applications.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    · A second master’s degree

    · Ability to engage, collaborate, and administer library services within a multi-campus university environment.

    · Experience in classroom teaching or in delivering instruction/information literacy education

    · Familiarity with grant-seeking and fundraising opportunities

    · Strong people skills

    · Commitment to collaborative decision-making
    · Effective communication skills
