  • The Lewis & Clark Library in Helena, MT seeks a full-time Teen Services Librarian. The Library is a hub of cultural, recreational and educational activity in Helena, the capital city of Montana. The first free public Library in Montana Territory, Lewis & Clark Library has strong roots and wide-spreading branches, including a Bookmobile. Our culture is collaborative, innovative, smart, and slightly obsessive about the role quality Library service plays in our community and the world.

    The Teen Services Librarian position is responsible for strategic leadership, management, and planning responsibilities for Library-wide teen services. The Teen Services Librarian plans, organizes and maintains the Library’s young adult collection and develops and implements a wide variety of programming for young adults from middle school through high school. The role of Teen Services Librarian will be supported by a team of experienced, talented professionals working in an award-winning, challenging environment.

    This role performs the following essential duties, among others:

    • Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates system-wide programs and services for teens.
    • Collaborates with schools and other agencies to serve young adults.
    • Creates and maintains attractive teen areas which invite young adults to use teen collections and the Library space.
    • Develops and administers the Teen Services programming budget and the teen materials budget.
    • Selects teen materials in all formats.
    • Evaluates and maintains teen collection.
    • Regularly staffs the Public Services Desk and Teen Space service counter.
    • Supervises and directs the work of designated Library Associates and volunteers.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    The education and experience considered necessary to perform these duties and responsibilities is typically acquired by earning an ALA-accredited Master’s in Library/Information Science (MLS/MLIS) with a minimum of one year of experience in relevant work, or within a closely related field, including supervision of staff.

    A combination of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    • Thorough knowledge of teen literature, digital and multimedia materials and electronic resources.
    • Genuine respect for teens and an ability to establish rapport with them.
    • Knowledge of the social and emotional development of teens.
    • Highly self-motivated, flexible, energetic, creative, tech-savvy and patient.
    • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment; including Office applications and library specific software.
    • Ability to learn and adapt to new software and equipment technologies.
    • Excellent interpersonal/customer service skills; ability to be consistently pleasant, positive and responsive to a diverse public and staff.
    • Excellent listening and communication skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team.
    • Knowledge of professional library practices and procedures.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize responsibilities to work independently or with others.

    • The work location is at the main Lewis and Clark Library branch in Helena, Montana.
    • The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds. Work is performed primarily in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet with a normal amount of noise and distractions expected in an office setting.
    • This position requires occasional overnight travel to annual conferences and workshops.
