  • Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) strives to increase the number of underrepresented students from low-income backgrounds who enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
     
    Under the supervision of the GEAR UP Director, the Educational Services Coordinator will lead in the development, coordination, implementation, documentation, and evaluation of comprehensive services and activities for program participants in an effort to motivate and develop necessary skills for students to complete a program of secondary education and enroll in a post-secondary institution.  The Educational Services Coordinator may serve as the primary liaison between the director and one or more designated target school(s) in the Anaheim Union High School District, as assigned. The Educational Services Coordinator will collaborate and develop strong partnerships with staff and administrators at school sites, and with key stakeholders and partners.  Based on program needs as determined by the GEAR UP Director, this position may be required to work out of various locations including the CSUF campus, GEAR UP target schools, or other locations. 
     
    *Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Employment for this position beyond current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.
    • Provides a variety of services that help students plan and prepare for higher education, such as workshops, programs, and college advisement, financial aid, personal insight questions, major exploration, etc. 
    • Designs, monitors, and updates participants' Individual Academic Plans and works in collaboration with the school site to work towards a shared advisement model. 
    • Provides leadership and coordination to monitor and document program services.
    • Maintains the organization and accuracy of digital and tangible files and records via established systems for documentation and tracking.
    • Advises and assists caseload, one-on-one and in small groups, with postsecondary preparation planning and selection. 
    • Advises, organizes, and carries out academic and career decision making activities. 
    • Organizes and conducts college tours, cultural experiences, enrichment activities, and job shadowing. 
    • Provides information about postsecondary programs, support for the college application process, and financial aid support
    • Supervises a team of ambassadors, graduate assistants, mentors, specialists, and other personnel, as assigned.
    • Implements procedures and services and leads team to ensure the achievement of grant objectives and established benchmarks; conducts and carries out ongoing evaluation of progress.
    • Maintains and develops close relationships with partner sites’  key stakeholders and on joint planning with the project. 
    • Assists in the preparation and completion of the annual performance report, evaluation, assessments, and other periodic updates on project activities and progress for internal use, the US Department of Education, CSUF, and other project constituents. 
    • Assists designated staff in writing and designing of GEAR UP brochures, posters, flyers, and other informational literature.
    • Promotes initiatives to increase the visibility of GEAR UP among CSUF, school sites, and community audiences.
    • Develops and carries out recruitment, training, supervision, and scheduling of staff as assigned.  Tracks and reports staff payroll and effort certifications.
    • Maintains and develops strong school and community relationships and presence by visiting and implementing programs at CSUF, project school sites, community-based organizations, and other off-campus sites; Represents GEAR UP and CSUF in various settings.
    • Travels to target school(s), off-campus sites, meetings, and trainings as assigned. Target school assignment(s) subject to change based on program needs, per the discretion of the GEAR UP Director.
    • Some early morning, evening, weekend, and overnight work required.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    • Minimum of three (3) years' experience working for a program focused on the retention and academic performance of low-income secondary students from diverse backgrounds. 
    • Experience working with underserved populations. 
    • Knowledge of the various segments of post-secondary institutions and opportunities for low income and underrepresented students. 
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
    • Ability to independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects.
    • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
    • Ability to apply a variety of policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist.
    • Ability to clearly and accurately relay information to students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and key stakeholders.
    • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of program procedures, activities, and the overall organization.
    • Proficiency working with computers and popular software packages such as but not limited to MS Office, Google Suite, and Adobe Acrobat. 
    • Ability to use negotiation and persuasion skills to achieve results and expedite projects. 
    • Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions. 
    • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
    • Experience documenting services. 
    • Ability to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal contacts including those at a higher level and those sensitive in nature.
    • Ability to work effectively with various members of the professional academic communities. 
    • Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. 
    • Must travel to target schools/partner sites and off-campus sites on a regular basis. 
    • Reliable, responsible, punctual and self-directed. 
    • Must be available to work 40 hours each week, with most hours falling between 7:30a - 4:00p Monday through Friday.
    • Must be able to pass and maintain a clean livescan check.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience in overcoming educational barriers similar to those confronting project participants. 
    • 5 years of experience working with students or educational programs.
    • Experience planning and conducting workshops, implementing academic advising initiatives, coordinating field trips and special events, and providing information about higher education.
    • Experience providing leadership and/or supervision for the work of others.
    • Ability to speak and write in Spanish.
    EDUCATION:
    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Services, or related field.
    • Minimum Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field preferred. 
    Prolonged sitting in front of the computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 20-25 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
