The Library Assistant is responsible for performing a wide variety of simple manual and clerical tasks in a library facility. This position plays a role in the Technical Department, Acquisitions, and Cataloging. Responsibilities include cataloging books and media into the collection, receiving and organizing donated materials, and preparing new materials for cataloging, editing records, relabeling materials, and assisting in withdrawing materials from the collection, when needed. In addition to cataloging, supports new staff and work students, assists other library departments, and helps with various other tasks. This role includes assisting patrons, offering computer and translation help, and ensuring building safety and emergency preparedness. An employee in this class requires no previous training or special knowledge of library routine, other than that received on the job. This class works under the supervision of a Library Associate or Librarian who reviews work in progress and upon completion.
