HELLERTOWN AREA LIBRARY
CIRCULATION DESK ASSISTANT
The Circulation Desk Assistant will work approximately 15 hours per week, with additional hours scheduled for sick days, vacations and special projects. This position requires exemplary customer service and compassion for patrons.
Responsibilities:
· Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking in and checking out materials, registering patrons and collecting fines.
· Accounts for statistics at circulation and information desk.
· Closes and opens the Library.
· Does typing, copying, and filing.
· Shelves materials and reads shelves.
· Processes, withdraws, repairs, or reconditions library materials.
· Assist patrons with ready-reference questions and reader advisory, bibliographic instruction and database searching.
· Assists patrons with mechanical operations of library equipment i.e. printing, faxing, scanning, and copying.
· Answers directional questions and refers patrons to appropriate personnel.
· Refills janitorial supplies and paper supplies.
· Closes out financial transactions at end of shift.
· Performs other related work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities:
· Working knowledge of the Hellertown Area Library methods and procedures.
· Ability to operate library machines properly.
· Keyboarding and filing ability.
· Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
· Willingness to maintain skills in above mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.
· Attention to detail.
Physical demands of the Position:
· Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping.
· Bending, twisting, and reaching.
· Talking and hearing; use of telephone.
· Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less.
· Handling: processing, picking up and shelving books.
· Mobility: travel to meetings outside of the library.
Mental Requirements
· Effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral form.
· Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from supervisor, verbally and in written form.
· Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) without a calculator.
· Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma.
· Keyboarding and general office experience.
· Use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
· Previous library or work experience.
