LIBRARIAN develops and maintains a collection of books and other materials and provides research and reference support to library users. Researches publications and suggests new sources and offerings for acquisition to enhance the collection. Being a LIBRARIAN performs cataloging and creates bibliographies and metadata to classify the library's collection of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual, and other materials. Designs and delivers research support processes and services to ensure that groups and individuals can access requested materials. Additionally, LIBRARIAN distributes up-to-date information on new acquisitions, library activities, and services. Oversees the selection and maintenance of technology infrastructure and tools used in the library. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The LIBRARIAN occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     The Research Librarian will join a highly skilled, high-performing, collaborative team of law librarians in providing sophisticated research support for faculty, students, and staff; research instruction to students; and reference assistance to members of the public. The ability to develop effective and collaborative working relationships is essential. The position will allow for exploration and skills development in any of several areas, such as business research, student outreach, creation and curation of research guides, online tutorials and other web applications, or other facets of library operations and administration. Our librarians share responsibility for creating a learning and working environment that supports all students, staff, faculty, and public patrons. Participation in professional development conferences and learning opportunities is supported.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Participate in the rotating reference schedule for both in-person and online reference services. This can involve in-depth legal and non-legal research for law faculty, supporting law students in their research goals, and aiding public patrons.
    • Serve on the Law Library’s collection development committee. May also serve on other committees and project teams, such as the Law Library’s Diversity, Equity, and Belonging (DEB) Standing Committee; Technology Steering Committee; Outreach and Social Media teams; talent search committees; and Law School and University committees.
    • Act as a library liaison to 1L Legal Research & Writing classes, the Law School’s Summer Research Assistant Program, and one or more of the Law School’s student-run journals.
    • Depending on Law School needs, library availability, librarian interest and teaching ability or aptitude, teach, co-teach, or assist with teaching for-credit classes such as Advanced Legal Research or specialized legal research classes. Previous instructional experience is helpful; however, the teaching team will provide support for new and developing teachers.
    • Support library operations and administrative projects as assigned.


    Required Qualifications:
    • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school (or equivalent non-U.S. law degree with substantial U.S. legal research experience). Degree must be completed by start date.
    • Excellent legal research skills with substantial knowledge of legal information systems and sources.
    • Strong service orientation.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently on independent and collaborative projects, to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently, and to thrive in a friendly but fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information in a succinct, clear, and timely manner.
    • Proficiency with standard office and library software applications and the ability to rapidly incorporate new technology into research methods and workflows.


    Preferred Quali fi cations:
    • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library or information sciences (or comparable degree from a foreign institution).
    • Experience with providing legal research and reference services in a library or similar setting.


    This is a full-time Senior Professional Research Staff (Research Scientist) position with benefits , reporting to the Law Library’s Assistant Director & Head of Research Services. This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.

    The preferred start date for this position is as soon as possible but is negotiable. The minimum salary is $75,000; salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors.
