Legal Services Director oversees the activities of the organization's legal department. Provides legal advice, interpretation, and guidance to senior management and officers regarding contracts, state/federal regulatory requirements, intellectual property or trademark protection, and other business matters. Being a Legal Services Director reviews all information and prepares defense for any legal actions against the organization or advises on prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Coordinates and reviews the work of internal or external legal staff. Additionally, Legal Services Director manages staff of attorneys. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to top management. The Legal Services Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     Overview of Position:

    Inland Counties Legal Services is seeking a Staff Attorney to join the Elder Law Team. Inland Counties Legal Services, Inc. is a nonprofit organization providing legal services to low-income persons residing in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. ICLS targets services to seniors and those in the greatest social and economic need. Legal services are provided by attorneys, or paralegals under the direct supervision of an attorney. Levels of service include advice and counsel, limited action (includes negotiations and preparation of legal documents), as well as direct representation before administrative law and civil courts. ICLS provides legal assistance in eight practice groups: Elder Law, Consumer, Housing, Family Law, Immigration, Systemic/Impact, Health Law, and Public Benefits.

    As part of the Elder law team, the staff attorney will be responsible for providing legal services to seniors, age 60 and over, in ICLS’s service area. The staff attorney is expected to have knowledge in a variety of areas of law impacting seniors, and the analytical ability to determine complex legal issues. The attorney will provide direct services to qualified seniors and travel to senior centers to provide services.

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Supervise paralegals and review closing letters and documents for paralegals.
    • Identify emergency legal matters, and refer to appropriate ICLS staff, or community resources, when outside the priorities of the Elder Law Team
    • Correctly identify potential client/ applicant issues
    • Provide accurate and helpful legal information and referrals for the Elder Law Team
    • Handle client calls and intakes as needed.
    • Timely handle and close assigned cases
    • Maintain resource materials regarding ICLS for distribution to the public and use by staff.
    • Travel to branch offices, courts as needed, and senior centers in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties to provide exceptional legal assistance to seniors.
    • Provide substantive presentations for community partners and the public including regularly participating in clinics/workshops and community outreach projects.
    • Manage a high-volume case load with a variety of deadlines and effectively evaluate each case’s urgency.
    • Work effectively as part of a team that includes attorneys, paralegals, support staff, volunteers, and students.

    Desired Education and Experience:

    • Degree from law school and active member of the California Bar in good standing
    • Prior experience with Elder Abuse, Probate, and Consumer Law issues
    • Ability to understand the objectives of poverty law.
    • Experience in regulatory and statutory interpretation
    • Valid Driver’s license and ability to travel for outreaches, court hearings and client meetings is required.
    • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
    • Prior work experience, paid or volunteer, in a legal service office serving low-
    • income clients is considered an asset for employment.
    • Entry level attorney (0-3 years’ experience) who is highly motivated and passionate about public service work, with sensitivity to those in crisis.
    • Self-motivated, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly.
    • Background in substantive legal areas impacting impoverished communities and experience working with organizations serving low-income clients.
    • Language: ability to read, write, and communicate in Spanish is preferred but not necessary

    Benefits & Compensation:

    P$78,000 to $105,000 per year DOE. Generous benefits package includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and matching 401K retirement plan contribution. Fourteen (14) paid holidays, generous vacation and sick leave policy, a School Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program (LRAP), and a cell phone stipend.
