The successful candidate could have a background in Product Development, Bakery, Food Manufacturing, Food Science, or another applicable Science or Engineering field. We are uniquely willing to train the right candidate. New Hope Mills is a third-generation, family-owned manufacturer dedicated to helping families make memories around the table. Our historic and innovative brand of pancake, waffle, cookie and biscuit mixes has recently been brought to life in our newly renovated on-site retail Store and Café, positioning our product line perfectly for continued revitalization and retail growth. Located in historic Auburn, NY, New Hope Mills is centrally convenient to Syracuse, Rochester, Ithaca, and the rest of the beautiful Finger Lakes region.

    Responsibilities:
    • Assists in all aspects of new product development, from concept exploration to manufacturing scale-up. • Assists in drafting, testing, and troubleshooting formulas, in order to meet nutritional, usage, performance, sensory, and cost targets. • Assists in new ingredient sourcing, evaluation, and approval. • Designs and carries out consumer and market research including surveys, trend analysis, home-usetests, sensory studies, and competitive product reviews. • Performs various analytical and sensory evaluations of ingredients, test formulas, production samples, and competitive products. • Critically evaluates and accurately enters ingredient data into the nutritional database. • Generates compliant Nutrition Facts panels and ingredient declarations. • Assists in the creation of manufacturing plans and quality testing specifications for new products. • Assists in the diagnosis of production failures and the development of compliant rework plans. • Supports the company’s commitment to food safety by serving on and contributing scientific insights to the New Hope Mills HACCP team.
    Requirements:
    • Ability to work well with colleagues in a professional and organized manner. • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively in either a technical or business environment. • Proficiency with unit conversions, simple algebra, ingredient cost calculations, and basic statistics. • Ability to maintain the integrity of highly sensitive and confidential intellectual property and business information. • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel (or equivalent) skills. • Physical ability to handle food allergens, taste products, and perform all other job responsibilities. BS Degree in a related field required or equivalent experience.
    Desired Advanced Skills:
    Should have at least two of the following seven items IF capable of learning the rest in a timely fashion 1. In-depth understanding of baking principles, ingredient interactions, and baked good formulation. 2. Detailed knowledge of FDA food labeling regulations, including nutrition facts labeling, serving size determination, ingredient declaration, allergen declaration, and product claims. 3. Proficiency in the management of accurate nutritional databases. 4. Intermediate understanding of food composition and chemistry relevant to nutrition, function, and flavor. 5. Ability to calculate molecular masses, balance chemical equations, and complete stoichiometric calculations. 6. Ability to effectively carry out consumer communications and other market research techniques to identify, refine, and validate new product development opportunities. 7. Successful experience with manufacturing (or production bakery) operations, including familiarity with quality control, GMPs, and LEAN methodology.
