    Summary

    The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding/chest-feeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.

     

    Position Reports To: Practice Manager


    Essential Functions

    1. Providing lactation assessment, management, education and instruction to patients.
    2. Performing consultations, telephone triage and prenatal education as appropriate.
    3. Offering post-delivery consultative care to patients: breastfeeding/chestfeeding, family bonding and planning, etc.
    4. Coordination and management of care for patients, including those with complex needs.
    5. Communicating effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers, being an advocate for the patient always.
    6. Evaluating patient's response to care and initiates independent and/or collaborative changes where appropriate.
    7. Provides current information about community resources for follow-up care and ongoing support.
    8. Accurately documents teaching and progress of the mother and baby in the medical record.
    9. Provides consultation to other disciplines as needed to support nursing care.
    10. Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding breastfeeding equipment and supplies.
    11. Develops and updates patient handouts, pamphlets, and other teaching aids.
    12. Provides formal and informal educational experiences for staff and other internal employees.
    13. Participates in continuing education through seminars, workshops, conferences and networking with others.
    14. Perform related assignments as requested in order to promote positive visitor, family, and co-worker relations.
    15. Teaches group prenatal newborn care and lactation classes.
    16. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
    17. Other duties as assigned.

    Position Requirements

    Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is an essential requirement of working at Confluence Health. Religious and medical exemptions will be considered upon request.


    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Current licensure in the state of Washington (RCW 18.88) or licensure through Multistate Nurse Licensure Compact (SSB 5499).
    • Must be currently certified in CPR and recertified every two years.
    • Proficient in use of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
    • Able to work independently and to be part of an interdisciplinary team.
    • Two years recent experience in nursing care of breastfeeding families.
    • Experience with program development.
    • Lactation Nurse Consultant should obtain IBCLC credential within two years.

    Desired:

    • BSN
    • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.
    • Pediatric, newborn and/or NICU experience.

    • Work is performed at a work station desk and in patient exam and treatment rooms, where space may be limited and confined. General supervision is provided by the Practice Manager with additional instructions, guidance, and directions provided by the physicians or providers with whom the RN is working.
