Lactation Consultant provides lactation support and education to patients and families. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Being a Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems, and advising physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. Requires an associate degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Lactation Consultant requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     Summary :

    The Lactation Consultant is responsible and accountable to work in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team to provide lactation care and clinical management. The role of the Lactation Consultant is to promote, support and protect breastfeeding as the optimal food choice for infants. The Lactation Consultant will develop, maintain, and coordinate support services for mothers in need of the service, whether self or physician referred. The Lactation Consultant will also be responsible for providing current education updates to nursing staff, providers and office staff for further depth of support to mothers and babies. The goal of Lactation Services is to ensure that all families who elect to breastfeed their infants will have a successful and satisfying experience.

    Responsibilities :

    • Demonstrates effective clinical management skills.
    • Oversees and facilitates daily lactation rounds.
    • Develops and maintains lactation policies to reflect current standards.
    • In-services staff and providers about new policies/practices involved in lactation services.
    • Represents the clinical specialty in community and professional groups.
    • Maintains a positive working relationship with all team members.
    • Serves as a Lactation resource for the nursing staff and other health care providers.
    • Is supportive of department and hospital's goals, philosophies and objectives.
    • Conforms to Hospital's professional dress code and code of conduct.
    • Maintains data for quality assurance initiatives.
    • Protects and maintains the patients' right to privacy.
    • Remains current in profession through journals, networking, and professional continuing education.
    • Complies with Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.
    • Adheres to Hospital Standards of Behavior.
