    About the role:

    The Laboratory Director will be responsible for the sustainable financial and commercial performance of the nominated business. They will be responsible for strategic and business planning and the execution of those plans. The Laboratory Director will be responsible to ensure the business meets all local federal government compliance and ALS government requirements.

    • Management of Environmental laboratory, plus any regional service centers.
    • Aligning the business to the ALS purpose; Science. Assurance. Sustainability.
    • Aligning the business to the ALS strategic themes, client centricity, growth, innovation and technology and the ALS way.
    • Aligning the business to the ALS brand promise; Right solutions Right partner.
    • Participation in the formulation of regional strategy and business plans.
    • Strategic and business planning for the business unit.
    • Ensure the business execute on the strategic plan and business plan objectives to achieve targets.
    • Alignment to a low to cost produce product positioning strategy.
    • Achieving budgeted financial performance and sustained profitable growth.
    • The preparation of annual budgets.
    • Managing CAPEX and OPEX to meet business needs.
    • Manage cost control, labor management and operational performance of the business unit.
    • The management of debt collection and cash conversion
    • Final approval of accounts payable.
    • Supporting the ALS brand position of technical leadership in the market.
    • Development and maintenance of client relationships.
    • Management of turnaround time performance and client service.
    • Providing timely and high-quality service to clients.
    • The development of a client service culture that supports high levels of client retention and share of market.
    • The development and execution of a sales & marketing strategy that targets new client acquisition.
    • The development and execution of a business development strategy that positions the business for high levels of performance and growth.
    • The development and implementation of a pricing strategy that facilitates business goals.
    • Management of formal client feedback mechanisms – NPS and/or client survey.
    • Builds trust within the team.
    • Takes ownership of business-critical initiatives.
    • Ensure that the staff structure and capabilities can facilitate current and future business needs including succession planning.
    • Lead a framework for staff engagement, development, and learning.
    • Holds staff accountable for outcomes.
    • Staff development to meet the current and future needs of the business.
    • Succession planning to support the continuing success of the business.
    • Management of the Performance Management Review framework and fulfilment of its goals.
    • Ensure direct reports have suitable skills and training for the roles they are fulfilling, including mentoring to direct reports.
    • Ensuring appropriate human resources management practices are developed and maintained.
    • Compliance with regulatory and ALS policy requirements for governance.
    • Ensure legislative and best practice compliance issues are observed.
    • Adhere to the ethical and compliance requirements of the ALS Limited brand and all associated policies.
    • Ensuring that the quality of data produced, and the methodology used is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards (based on ISO17025, NELAC etc).
    • Ensure the integrity of the laboratory’s quality system is maintained and further developed.
    • Assessing the results of quality audits and client complaints and implementing improvements as required.
    • Foster a working environment that aims to increase quality, safety, productivity and efficiency through upgrading technologies, methodologies, and innovative processes.
    • Managing and supporting the development of a diverse workforce.
    • Alignment and support towards ALS’ carbon reduction strategy.
    • Support towards the social commitments of the organization.

    About you:

    • The submission of a monthly report based on their role.
    • The submission of quarterly business plan updates for the business unit.
    • Provide local representation and leadership in any major contract negotiations (including leases).
    • Be present as the lead person on site for all legal requirements.

    • Ensure Quality Systems are adhered to in performance, review, and reporting of laboratory duties and communicate all quality issues.

    • Ensure all statutory management and reporting requirements are met.

    • Play an active role in the ALS safety program by correcting or reporting unsafe acts and conditions that are observed during the day-to-day operations to create a zero-injury work environment.
    • Participate in and support HSE initiatives, as required by ALS leadership.
    • Understand and use HSE precautions (such as but not limited to fume hoods and PPE) while working with chemicals and samples of unknown hazards.
    • Ensure the health and safety of staff, contractors, and/or visitors by providing appropriate leadership, due diligence, resources, training, and enforcement for all individuals onsite.
    • Monitor and enforce the health, safety and environment policies, procedures and ensure compliance with the relevant regulations.
    • Actively promote awareness of these policies, procedures, and regulations amongst company personnel.
    • Actively support and participate in all OHS initiatives. Lead by example.
    • Report all personal injuries and incidents and assist with investigations as per company policy.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Science and/or Business
    • Minimum 10 years’ previous laboratory and/or business experience, including not less than 3 years in a management role.

    Physical Demands:

    • The ability to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management, and clients.
    • Ability to sit and/or stand for 100% of an 8-hour day.
    • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer, syringes, and other equipment.
