Site Occupational Medical Director

  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Site Occupational Medical Director to provide managerial and technical leadership for the on-site Health Services Clinic at Berkeley Lab, overseeing staff and ensuring a safe workplace for employees and affiliates. This includes planning, directing, and managing health examination programs and technical initiatives, while integrating ES&H requirements to encourage compliance.

    The Site Occupational Medical Director collaborates with EHS Leadership to set the strategic direction for its occupational health and wellness programs, develop performance measures and identify performance improvement initiatives to improve medical care and services. This high-profile role interacts with all levels of personnel and management from the Director's Office, Laboratory Directorate, Department of Energy and external regulatory and accreditation agencies. In addition, this position will also work with research and development divisions to deliver cost-effective, customer-focused services supporting world-class science.

    Berkeley Lab has a dynamic workforce of about 4,000 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $1.4 billion. The University of California (UC) manages Berkeley Lab for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. The Health Services Clinic offers a series of clinical programs and services available to the benefit of Berkeley Lab employees as well as in support of Berkeley Lab research projects. These include a variety of evaluations, convenient care, first aid and wellness, and worker assistance and accommodation.

    What You Will Do:

    Clinical Services

    • Manage the Site Occupational Medicine Program, including responsibility for the strategic leadership and management of the Laboratory's wellness and medical surveillance programs.
    • Conduct medical exams and ensure they meet professional standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Utilize medical expertise to establish the Laboratory's approach to maintaining a healthy and productive workforce, employing all the components of preventive and occupational medicine, including medical surveillance and certification, behavioral health, worker compensation, health promotion, emergency response, and medical epidemiology.
    • Review and incorporate health and medical surveillance standards as promulgated by OSHA, DOE, and other Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies.
    • Design and lead interdisciplinary audits.

    Health Services Clinic Management

    • Provide expert-level managerial, technical leadership and formal supervision to a small Health Services Clinic staff.
    • Recruit, train, mentor, and develop team members, recognize meritorious performance and build a cohesive, integrated and highly capable team.
    • Maintain relationships with DOE counterparts and implement Integrated Safety Management principles.
    • Budgetary authority and provide input for Health Services operating budgets.
    • Provide ES&H requirements for project management and ensure compliance during new construction and maintenance activities.

    EH&S Division Leadership

    • Advise Laboratory management on occupational, personnel, and environmental health issues.
    • Serve as a spokesperson to regulatory agencies.
    • Collaborate with EHS leadership team to shape division mission and vision.

    What is Required:

    • A Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited school, licensure to practice medicine in California, and Certification in Occupational Medicine.
    • Extensive experience working in an occupational medicine organization providing preventive and occupational medical care and services to a dynamic workforce exposed to a wide variety of workplace hazards.
    • At least five years of successful clinic and staff management, with proven ability to effectively manage a team of healthcare professionals.
    • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgment and make appropriate medical decisions regarding ill or injured employees, including treatment selection, referrals, and assessment of work status.
    • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in detecting, controlling, and mitigating hazards associated with complex technologies and the ability to provide technical consultation and advanced problem-solving support for customer divisions regarding new processes and technologies in a dynamic research environment.
    • Exceptional leadership skills and extensive experience developing strategic solutions to complex problems and leading innovative initiatives. Capability to plan activities, identify workplace hazards, implement controls, oversee work performance, and incorporate feedback for improvement.
    • Excellent written communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, including handling sensitive issues and difficult situations effectively.
    • Ability to influence others' perspectives in sensitive situations while maintaining productive relationships, including successful negotiation and interaction with regulatory organizations, with sensitivity to community issues.
    • Skill in developing, implementing, and evaluating multidisciplinary EH&S programs.
    • Expertise in federal, California state, and local regulations and ability to apply DOE requirements across various EH&S topics.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience in federal or state occupational safety programs.

    • The Site Occupational Medical Director is a career position that is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory Director. This appointment is at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
    • The Site Occupational Medical Director is expected to pay $320,000.00 to $355,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $257,916.00 to $435,216.00 for the H72.7- Occupational Health Services Manager 3 position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, while also aligned with the internal peer leadership group.
    • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
    • Work will be primarily performed on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
