Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • There is a management career opportunity available in JMCRS animal program. A Manager, JMCRS Animal Program is responsible for more than 50 employees and responsible for 20,000 to 35,000 total cage capacity. With the final amount determined by the technical demands of the areas managed. In addition to animal care the incumbent may also be responsible for supply warehouse, materials handling, and supply processing areas from soiled to sterilized handling. With the final mix of vivarium responsibility determined by the technical demands of the animal program and supply operations assigned. It is expected the incumbent may be responsible for multiple mouse rooms, supply operations areas, and may have responsibilities in both the Bar Harbor and Ellsworth campuses. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of their assigned areas including but not limited to leadership and guidance, employee recruitment and hiring, employee development, employee engagement, employee safety, performance management, project management, LEAN management practices, and execution of colony management/service project plans.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership in alignment with JAX Values to create a respectful and supportive working environment.
    • Ensure quality standards are met utilizing work area audits, training, and education for employee development. To ensure biosecurity, colony management, animal welfare, and equipment calibration meet or exceed standards.
    • Partners with Employee Health and Safety Services to meet established safety goals to provide a safe working environment for employees.
    • Collaborates with a broad range of JAX programs to develop and implement new technologies and operating methodologies consistent with regulatory guidelines and internal policies for improving productivity, quality, and animal welfare. To include documentation development and updates as appropriate.
    • Accountable for implementation of mouse colony plans, project management, and order management. Developing and implementing reporting tools to monitor employee performance and accurate recording of data to support effective reporting.
    • Staff development from recruitment to mentoring employees. Setting goals and expectations for employees and the work area. Ensuring employees have the knowledge and technical skills necessary for the defined work.
    • Is responsible for materials storage logistics and materials processing.
    • Ensures efficient and safe use of various materials processing equipment.

    Qualifications:

    • Must have 5-years of experience in the operation and maintenance of barrier vivarium's clean room practices, equipment, supply logistics, and workplace safety.
    • Proven leadership managing, mentoring, and training employees.
    • Must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities to employees and hold employees accountable through completion.
    • Proven professional communication and correspondence to be able to communicate with employees within reporting structure, peers within and across programs, senior and executive management, and with external customers as necessary.
    • Knowledge of genetics, both biological and Mendelian probabilities, equivalent to undergraduate level college coursework.
    • Able to execute skills in a variety of computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Excel and Word, familiar with database functionality, data warehouse and reporting, and ERP systems.

    Pay Range: $84,300 - $141,138
