    Job Description

    This position supports the School of Art and Design (SoAD). The staff member provides logistical support in the management of all SoAD art studios, classrooms, and other areas. Serves as a building coordinator for Arts Annex, Crabbe Hall, and secondary building coordinator for Guggenheim Hall. Serves as a liaison between the university’s Health and Safety department and SoAD. Coordinates room/facilities scheduling, manages and supervises student employees, purchases equipment and supplies. Performs other administrative duties as assigned in the complex nature of the operating procedures of SoAD. Assists students and professors with proper and safe usage of tools and equipment used various aspects of art production and art specific spaces. Has decision making responsibility for areas with considerable potential for safety hazards (wood working, welding, bronze casting, acids in printmaking, chemicals in photo, firing kilns and foundry, and more).

    The selected staff member is responsible for: Administrative duties, ie. (purchasing equipment and supplies, email correspondence with all campus employees and students. Hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of multiple student workers. Submitting work orders for staff and faculty. Serve the needs of upper administration and faculty while remaining neutral and unbiased. Fixing and operating tools and equipment. Contact person for police, health and safety, faculty, students, staff, etc. HAZMAT disposal, All SoAD room/facilities scheduling logistics. Upholding all measures of safety throughout SoAD buildings and spaces including determining operating and record keeping procedures which may include fabricating new lab/studio apparatuses as needed. May be instructor of record in occasional special topics courses of 1-3 credits per semester. 

    The ideal candidate will oversee the technical operations of all area facilities (Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Computer Graphics, Drawing, Fibers, Foundations, Graphic Design, Jewelry, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture). The Lab Coordinator will create a safe work environment in all laboratories, studios and classrooms and serve as the school health and safety coordinator for compliance with university health & safety, HAZMAT tagging and disposal, EPA, and OSHA regulations. Responsibilities include organizing and maintaining all areas tools and equipment, all equipment maintenance and repair, submitting and tracking work orders, purchasing and delivery of supplies and materials. The Laboratory Coordinator will work with department faculty on special projects as needed to organize, repair, and maintain all labs in support of area initiatives. They will organize and execute the health & safety training for all school equipment and materials. Candidates must be highly organized, safety minded, self-motivated, and able to interact with faculty, staff and students. The Laboratory Coordinator position may include some weekend and evening hours. Physical demands include, but are not limited to, the possibility of lifting, carrying, and transporting of objects at or over 50 lbs; reaching; kneeling; climbing stairs, ramps, and ladders; standing and sitting for long periods; loud work environment. 

    Primary Job Duties

    Room/Facilities maintenance, safety, and proper use of equipment - 30%
    This position is responsible for managing the studio facilities and safe use of equipment and materials therein. Knowledge of both large and small power tools is required. Knowledge of multiple artistic processes is also helpful, including but not limited to welding, woodworking, metals, sculptural foundry, ceramics, photo, printmaking, digital fabrication, and printer/copiers is also helpful.

    Room/Facilities scheduling of classes, studios, meetings - 25%
    Scheduling of all CRN entries to unlock doors with card swipe entry for all classes, schedule artist talks, meetings, and other room usage and reservations for SoAD, as well as occasionally PVA. After Scheduling is determined, this position is also responsible for managing the entry of the reservation into 25Live Pro and any special equipment or resources needed. 

    Hiring, Training, Supervision of Student Studio Techs - 30%
    This position hires, trains, schedules, and supervises student workers each semester to serve as Studio Technicians to provide manual labor, cleaning, organizing, fixing equipment, receiving and delivering packages and mail, assisting students, moving offices, painting, and anything else as needed. This position may be called upon to drive a cargo van or large truck (24 foot) to transport equipment. 

    Purchasing, maintaining, and repair of equipment, tools, and supplies - 15%
    This position purchases equipment, educational supplies, office equipment, office supplies, and repair supplies as needed.

    Special qualifications

    Licenses: Driver's license with ability to drive a passenger van.

    Education: Required: A BA or higher in studio or similar professional equivalent experience. Preferred: MFA

    Experience: in safety among woodworking, welding, sculpture, metals, forging, ceramic firing, printmaking chemical processes.
