Acoustics Graduate Research Assistant

  • What You Will Do

    Join our world class team of Earth Scientists! The National Security Earth Science Group (EES-17) in the Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking for graduate research assistants in the area of acoustics to join us in our efforts to meet the nation's earth science, environmental science, energy development, and national security challenges. In particular, we are searching for applicants with backgrounds in acoustics research, numerical modeling, machine learning applied to acoustics, and experimental knowledge applicable to acoustics measurements.

    As a researcher in our group, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and will take an active role in theory/algorithm development, experimental design and execution, and numerical modeling. Examples of research topics include, but are not limited to the following:
    • acoustic sensor development­­­­
    • machine learning for acoustic signal processing
    • acoustic modeling for sensor physics and improvements.

    This position will involve collecting data in an acoustic laboratory, performing signal processing, and modeling the acoustic response of materials.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    Capability in the following areas relevant to EES Division:
    • Familiarity with coding in languages like C/C , Fortran, Python, Matlab, etc.
    • Experience in any of the areas of numerical modeling, experimentation, and signal processing.
    • Motivation to succeed in an independent work environment and demonstrated effective communication skills to interact with a multidisciplinary, integrated team.

    Currently enrolled in or admitted to a relevant graduate degree program.

    Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours or full-time equivalent (with the exception of those working on their thesis/dissertation).

    Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

    Desired Qualifications:

    • A background in acoustics or wave physics.
    • Familiarity with acoustic experiments and data collection.
    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
