Provide services as a Laboratory Assistant in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). To provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that an adequate clean inventory is available for immediate usage. Ensure adequate supplies for operation are kept on hand to maintain operation. Stock supply center and ensure that reagents are stored at proper temperatures. Order and stock standard laboratory supplies.
- Maintain stock levels of glassware, equipment and supplies.
- Dispense trash into appropriate waste stream, either placement in boxes for disposal as medical pathological waste (MPW) or discard as general laboratory waste.
- Maintain clean and orderly workspace in the laboratory.
- Certify operation of all facility eye wash stations on a monthly basis. Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory work area and equipment.
- Keep staff updated on issues and problems pertaining to glassware procedures and needed repairs to equipment.
- Maintain inventory and keep record of item usage for future orders of supplies.
- Assist as needed with supply inventory, stock rotation and or ordering of routine supplies through POTS.
- Keep adequate reserves in bulk dock storage area and notify purchasing staff of shortages of other stock items. Prepares lists of standard and specialized supplies required based on staff requirements.
- Communicate with the lab staff daily to ensure their needs are being met. Coordinate with facility manager in many day-to-day activities.
- Keep staff updated on issues and problems pertaining to glassware procedures and needed repairs to equipment; and prepare inspection reports.
- Collaborate with outside repair personnel to initiate and resolve typical service needs on facility equipment such as glassware washers, autoclaves, and water purification systems.
- Segregate clean, process and return cleaned items to designated pickup shelves or to stock shelves. 1
- Order and stock standard laboratory glassware and associated supplies. 2
- Keep admin staff updated on issues relating to needed repairs to equipment. 3
- Communicate with the lab staff daily to ensure their needs are being met.
- Ensure proper operation and daily maintenance of all equipment.
- Ensure adequate supplies for operation are kept on hand to maintain operation Utilize AMBIS system to order supplies for glassware operation.
- Assist with cleaning, organizing and other administrative tasks as directed by Laboratory personnel.
- Maintain a supply center which is stocked with various perishable reagents for LISB scientific staff; monitor temperatures of refrigerator and freezer; stock supply center and ensuring reagents are stored at proper temperatures; charge labs for items taken from supply center; maintain inventory and keep record of item usage for future orders of supplies.
- Order lab-related items biological, chemical, office, consumable.
- Take stock of the above items in lab and ensure they are ordered when required Receive shipped items which have been ordered and put them away.
- Ship biological materials to intra-and-extramural investigators Culture, test, and freeze down cells.
- Respond to issues with the building as detailed by investigators and ensuring timely resolution Place continued service contracts for instruments within the lab.
- Work with approved vendors to ensure continued operation of laboratory equipment Keep track of cell lines and DNA repositories within the lab.
- Ensure organization and cleanliness within the laboratory areas Ensure timely removal of lab-generated recycling and waste.
- Respond to issues regarding the building and contact the appropriate groups Ensure fidelity of data of past investigators by spinning up hard drives consistently.
- Work products and documents related to keeping rooms clean and organized - Ad-Hoc
- Assisting with discarding any items that are no longer able to meet laboratory standards. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents related to ensuring the lab is adequately supplied with the
- necessary equipment and consumable stock. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents related to ensuring deliveries are properly delivered to their intended destinations and items are put away in a timely manner. - Ad-Hoc
- Work products and documents related to ensuring building issues are being resolved reported in a timely manner - Ad-Hoc
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
- Skilled in MS Office Suite and Outlook.
- Expertise in the operation of computer, general data acquisition and architectural programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
