Description
Commaris is a fast-paced, energetic company in the Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) market. We are building a team that combines deep expertise in UAS design, best-in-class hardware and software product development, technical sales, and operational excellence to provide UAS platforms and application solutions for commercial customers. Our primary locations are Woburn, MA and Las Vegas, NV.
We are currently looking for a world-class Engineering Manger to join our UAS team. Candidates should be self-starters who bring positive attitude, integrity, and enthusiasm to our team as we transform the UAS market.
This position reports to the President. This is a hybrid position in which most activities will occur on-site in our Woburn headquarters, but some remote work can be blended in over time.
Key Responsibilities and Activities
- Serve as chief architect for the overall UAS design. Translate customer needs and business objectives into product requirements in collaboration with program management, regulatory, and operational team leads, then create an appropriate system architecture and oversee execution from concept through release.
- Supervise the Engineering department, which spans electrical, mechanical, and software functions, with employees in both Woburn and Las Vegas offices. Prioritize projects, allocate people and equipment, provide technical guidance, and meet program milestones on-time and on-budget.
- Contribute to the technical design, developing embedded electronic hardware and software components. Outsource and manage external development when deemed necessary.
- Own Commaris’s change management process.
- Support other Commaris processes, such as product development, material review board, etc., as appropriate.
- Act as Chief Engineer in Commaris’s product data management (PDM) system to approve drawings.
- Identify potential suppliers and strategic partners for Commaris.
- Attend relevant virtual and in-person conferences, symposia, trade shows, and the like, gather information about potential suppliers, partners, and competitors, and report on findings.
- Occasionally represent Commaris at relevant virtual and in-person trade shows, conferences, symposia, and the like, by speaking and/or fielding questions in the Commaris booth.
- Support UAS test activities such as test plan creation and report generation to ensure regulatory compliance, as appropriate.
- Support the writing of BVLOS and other waivers, exemptions, and other such requests on behalf of Commaris and its customers for complex, autonomous operations.
- Support field demonstrations of Commaris’s products and services, as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant work experience
- Experience using weight-critical, high-performance design techniques for electromechanical and electronics systems, including size, weight, power, and cost considerations
- Experience designing and validating embedded systems
- Experience developing requirements and verification test plans
- Experience overseeing PCBA manufacturing
- Experience with UAS design, manufacturing, assembly, or repair
- Experience in a production and/or schedule-driven, product development environment
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
- Outstanding organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with lithium batteries, particularly LiPo
- Familiarity with power electronics design and considerations for integration
- Familiarity with on-board and off-board UAS detect-and-avoid (DAA) solutions
- Familiarity with electronics packaging and thermal management
- Familiarity with radio communications technology and implementation
- Familiarity with PDM systems and the ability to read drawings.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Experience with UAS DAA systems, their efficacy, and their technological and regulatory trends
- Experience with optical sensors, both active and passive
- Experience with Altium PCB design and harness design software
- Experience with General Aviation and/or UAS regulations and/or standards (e.g., 14 CFR Part 107, Part 89, Part 23, or ASTM F2245)
- Part 107 license
- Experience developing software (e.g., C, C , Python) and using version control (e.g., git, SVN) to maintain codebases
- Experience maintaining positive relationships with regulators
- Knowledge of UAS applications of artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, and the like.
Travel
- Travel is likely to be in the 10-15% range, with occasional trips to Las Vegas, conferences, demonstrations, select field operations, etc.
