  • Duties

    An MIT (Diagnostic Ultrasound) works directly with patients and Physicians and operates equipment that uses high-frequency soundwaves to take images and scans of the body's internal organs. An Ultrasound Technician is also known as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or as a Sonographer. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Perform examinations of the abdomen, retroperitoneal (including bladder), thyroid, testes, aorta and Carotid arteries and a variety of other vascular studies.
    • Performs all available diagnostic ultrasound studies involving the application of high frequency sound waves to humans for the diagnosis of disease.
    • Applies knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, biology, physiology and acoustical physics; and understanding of the functioning (including underlying principles) of the equipment to achieve optimal results.
    • Interacts constantly between the patient and equipment during examinations, adjusting amplitude and the position of the probe on the patient's body in response to the technologist's instantaneous recognition of the image being produced.
    • Recognizes specific diagnostic patterns during the test to be able to perform a proper and complete examination.
    • Localizes fluid and other organs for marking location for biopsies or drainages and correlate these with other images.
    • Uses inherent judgment and decision-making to recognize false positive and false negative tracings.
    • Works closely with the Radiologist to ensure complete and accurate patient scans.
    • Consults immediately when necessary with the Radiologist to avoid incomplete examinations.
    • Monitors patient's condition and vital signs.
    • Takes immediate action when patient's condition indicates undue stress, trauma or other adverse symptoms indicating onset of complications.
    • Receives and understands requests or instructions for routine and very difficult procedures.
    • Understands and carries out the requests made by physicians or seeks assistance of the supervisor when an uncommon, unique or new procedure is required.
    • Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate physician.
    • Uses an in-depth knowledge of location and function of major body organs and structures related to the specialized field in which the employee works to obtains desired results in specialized or complicated procedures where no standard instructions exist.
    • Assist with the scheduling of patients for examinations, registers patients for examinations, and case edits examinations to ensure that reports will go to completion and cancels examinations where appropriate.

    Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
    Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
    Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
    Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

    Qualifications

    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Desired Certifications: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
    • English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
    Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:

    GS 9 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS 8), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services.

    The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

    1. Knowledge of more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
    2. *Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
    3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

    Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
