Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Special Education provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Special Education typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research. This teaching position works with and supports students who have academic needs, behavioral challenges, life skills needs, etc. A typical day could include: supporting students in small groups with LIPs programming; supporting students individually as they de-escalate and process through their emotions; supporting students as they increase their independence with personal hygiene; etc. In addition to supporting the education of students grades K-3, this position is an integral part of the Vivian E Hussey Elementary School Special Education Team. This team of five certified educators oversee several education technicians; provides professional development opportunities to the whole staff; support and mentor new special education teachers to the school/district; and seamlessly support each other’s needs and building needs throughout the day.
