Instructor - Computer Science teaches courses in the discipline area of computer and information sciences. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Computer Science provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Computer Science typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research. Computer Science Faculty Instructor, Governor's Honors Program

  • The Governor’s Honors Program (GHP is a 4-week residential summer program for skilled, knowledgeable, and talented high school sophomores and juniors. GHP offers instruction designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. The instruction GHP provides is legislatively required to be significantly different than what is provided in a typical classroom.

     

    Duties & Responsibilities: Instructors for Computer Science will provide students with a curriculum that encompasses a wide range of relevant topics, such as knowledge-based artificial intelligence, principles of machine learning, and interdisciplinary applications across fields such as biology, biomedical engineering, and finance. Instructors should employ a multi-faceted learning approach, weaving together theoretical instruction, practical assignments, and collaborative project work.

     During the summer, Computer Science Majors will: 

            Gain a comprehensive understanding of computer science concepts and programming principles.

            Develop the ability to think algorithmically and resolve programming problems effectively.

            Acquire practical knowledge about machine learning, such as hyperparameter tuning, bias-variance tradeoff, algorithmic bias, different types of learning models, and model evaluation metrics.

            Learn best practices related to user experience (UX) design, machine learning modeling, and generative AI technologies.

            Master the essentials of environment setup and version control, including proficiency in tools such as Anaconda for package management and environment control, and GitHub for versioning and collaborative development.

            Understand how to efficiently use AI coding tools to generate, analyze, and optimize code, leading to a streamlined development process.

     

    Note: GHP provides robust onboarding for our summer faculty and will provide as much information and guidance to support instructors as needed.

     

     

    Schedule:

             The program runs from June 16, 2024– July 13 2024. It is a 4-Week, Summer Residential Assignment at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA (on-campus housing and dining plan are also provided)

             Faculty will provide instruction in the “major” discipline Monday – Saturday, and will provide instruction in an elective area of study Monday-Friday.

             Faculty members are required to attend paid staff orientation and training sessions in advance of the summer program, work collaboratively with discipline specific department staff on an ongoing basis; participate in outside-of-class activities when directed; and other assigned tasks related to the Governor’s Honors Program.

             A training session will be held for new and returning faculty on Friday, March 22nd and Saturday March 23rd 2024 on the campus of Georgia Southern University. Faculty must prepare unit plans and/or a syllabus and course overviews that reflect a rigorous and engaging curriculum. Faculty must be able to maintain accurate records of attendance.

    Minimum Training & Experience: Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Minimum of (3) three years successful teaching experience in the specific content area at the college or secondary level. Experience teaching gifted education classes, Advanced Placement, or honors courses OR comparable experience teaching high school age students in a private or out of school environment (e.g., YMCA, private studio, professional ensemble classes) within the applicant’s field of expertise.

     Preferred Qualifications:
    • Significant experience teaching gifted secondary learners

    • Proven ability to provide a challenging and differentiated instructional experience to diverse learners
    • Proven ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
    • Ability to participate in coaching and professional growth opportunities to improve instructional practice and to support others to   improve their craft
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • High level of professional integrity
