Laboratory Manager/Chemical Hygiene Officer/Chemistry InstructorCoe College’s Department of Chemistry invites applications for the position of Laboratory Manager, Chemical Hygiene Officer, and Instructor, beginning August 2023. Responsibilities will include setup and maintenance of some teaching labs, serving as the college’s Chemical Hygiene Officer, and teaching chemistry labs and courses as needed (Analytical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry laboratory in fall 2023). Applicants should have strong organization skills with experience in chemistry and teaching.Work Schedule: Full-time, 12 months, benefit eligibleInstructor
- Responsible for course design and instruction for sophomore level Analytical Chemistry lecture/discussion (3 hours/week) and separate Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (6 hours/week). Courses cover both equilibrium and instrumental topics.
- Other courses in future terms could include introductory courses and laboratories and/or non major courses and laboratories.
Laboratory Manager- Orders supplies, prepares reagents for all Chemistry laboratories during the academic year.
- Maintain and/or assist with repair of instruments in the Chemistry Department.
- Supervises work-study students in the department.
- Maintains Chemistry Stockroom. This includes maintaining an adequate supply of chemicals and necessary equipment as well as cleaning of the deionized water still and maintenance of the Nanopure water system.
- Maintains electronic and physical inventories of all chemicals found in Peterson Hall.
Chemical Hygiene Officer- Develops and implements the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Working knowledge of the Laboratory Safety Standard plus OSHA and EPA rules and regulations are desirable.
- Serves as a point of contact for the College concerning best Laboratory Safety practices.
- Documents accidents and exposure to hazardous chemicals and makes sure it is done in accordance with federal and state law.
- Coordinates the testing of safety equipment such as safety showers, fume hoods and fire extinguishers.
- Conducts laboratory safety training for all students and employees working with hazardous chemicals.
- Maintains a data base of Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals housed on campus in accordance to federal guidelines.
- Oversees the collection and disposal of all chemical waste on campus. The CHO must solicit bids and then select a hazardous waste disposal company to remove the waste from campus. This occurs on an annual basis.
Required Qualifications:- M.S. or above.is required.
- Strong organization skills with experience in chemistry and teaching.
- Successful completion of a background check in accordance with Coe College policy.
