    About the Opportunity

    This position will provide assistance Dr. Joel Palko, a principal investigator within the department of ophthalmology at West Virginia University School of Medicine. Dr. Joel Palko is a clinician-scientist in the department of ophthalmology at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He is a fellowship trained glaucoma surgeon with a lab researching the role biomechanics and blood flow has in ocular diseases such as glaucoma.

    What you’ll do:

    • Prepares reagents as needed by the lab staff
    • Maintains and genotypes animal colonies
    • Process orders for laboratory supplies
    • Assist investigators in the laboratory with their experiments
    • Keep detailed records of research data, written and computerized logs of mouse and rat colony censuses, material safety data sheets, and chemical inventories
    • Dissection of ocular tissues for experimentation
    • Experimental setup for both ex vivo and in vivo studies
    • Opportunity for clinical research if desired
    • Document, analyze, and present experimental results and discuss findings
    • Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, engineering or related science field; OR an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
    • A minimum of six (6) months of experience working in a research laboratory desired. Relevant experience in a biological research laboratory setting is preferred.
    • Strong verbal and written communication, time management, organizational, and self-motivation skills.
    • Skilled at using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
    • Knowledge of general laboratory terminology. Knowledge of medical terminology would be helpful.
    • Ability to measure volumes and/or weights of chemicals, and apply mathematical concepts to calculate concentrations (in molar units) and prepare solutions according to precise specifications.
    • Ability to operate general laboratory equipment (i.e. pH meter, scales, pipetmen, centrifuges, etc.) and the willingness and ability to learn new techniques, procedures, or protocols and apply them in an appropriate manner.
    • Ability to gather, understand and implement technical protocols from current literature.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
    • Ability to maintain records and inventories.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to use tools including wrenches to perform assembly or standard mechanical repairs of laboratory equipment.
    Requirements


    Work will be performed in a standard laboratory environment including using computers and laboratory equipment with electrical connections. The applicant must comply with all laboratory safety procedures and clothing/equipment requirements. Exposure to laboratory animals and biological samples is expected; protective measures and safety training will be provided. The applicant will have close mentorship and training with Dr. Palko but should have the ability to work independently as part of a research team.
