    CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

    The Instructional Specialist will be responsible for programmatic and instructional leadership roles primarily spanning K-12 (student and teacher), undergraduate, graduate student education/outreach in the Center for Hybrid, Active, and Responsive Materials (CHARM) and undergraduate and graduate education in Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (CBE).


    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    CHARM

    • Provide support for key education and outreach programmatic initiatives under the direction of the CRiSP/CHARM Executive Director and in collaboration with the CRiSP Program Coordinator
    • Assist with conceptualizing and implementing initiatives in coordination with academic departments, UD College of Engineering administrative units, Undergraduate Research Program, and Graduate College. Activities may include but are not limited to:
      • Develop practices to promote a sense of community and professional development among the CHARM undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs – including in ways that advance CHARM’s education and outreach.
      • Develop new pathways for materials science and engineering teacher training in partnership with the CHARM leadership team and the CRiSP Program Coordinator.
      • Support programmatic goals to broaden participation in materials research and education through new and existing partnerships with HBCU and minority-serving institutions, including PREM activities.
      • Support the CHARM Research Experiences for Undergraduates and CHARM (TeenSHARP) HighRise Program with tasks related to session coordination and implementation.
      • Oversee the collection of education and outreach data to assist with strategic planning, annual reporting, and grant proposal preparation
    • Develop activities and programs with close attention to budget and administrative procedures.
    • Maintain organized records and checklists for core programmatic activities.
    • Perform job-related duties as assigned.

    CBE

    • Assist in curriculum development and building new pedagogical techniques for engineering education via the instruction of one course per semester in CBE.
    • Establish pathways for diverse students to matriculate and succeed in College of Engineering Ph.D. programs.
    • Assist with elements of ABET data collection.
    • Provide graduate student and postdoc community building and professional development and/or mentoring support – leverage existing programs and infrastructure impacting CHARM students and CBE students more broadly (e.g., EmPOWER, CBI).
    • Pilot above CBE activities with CHARM graduate students and postdocs as appropriate with goal of expansion to the larger CBE (and possibly external) community as relevant.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master’s degree in a related STEM field and four years of teaching experience.
    • Knowledge of graduate-level materials research and higher education environments.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational skills, program development, and project management skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and responsiveness.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to foster a collaborative work environment.
    • Ability to interact well with people of all ages and backgrounds.
    • Ability to develop, coordinate, and implement projects, while managing multiple tasks concurrently and prioritizing among competing needs.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents on a variety of research management and outreach topics.
    • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate ad-hoc reports that are meaningful and understandable to those not familiar with the data being reported.
    • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply University and funding agency guidelines and procedures.
    • High level of competency with calendaring, collaboration, and communication tools (e.g., Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
