- Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for the performance of assessment, reassessment, development and assistance in development, and implementation of patient’s plan for care for Healthcare Associated Infections, reportable communicable diseases, multiple resistant organisms, isolation precautions, and exposure/outbreak situations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the infectious diseases, and treatment therapies for the specific patient populations. Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of infectious/communicable diseases. Demonstrates knowledge of specific conditions, diseases, and treatment therapies for the employee population.
- Reviews pertinent data, i.e. lab values and other diagnostic studies, recognizes abnormal results, and coordinates with interdisciplinary team in development of an appropriate care plan to address abnormal results.
- Ensures accurate and timely communication of infection control statistics and infection control issues to all members of the health care team.
- Uses aggregate data along with external knowledge bases and comparative data, to pursue opportunities for improvement. Stays current on Joint Commission and CMS definitions for appropriately abstracting data in the various measurements.
- Develops and reviews the Infection Control Risk Assessment and Infection Control Plan annually. Bases the Infection Control Plan on evidence based guidelines while addressing infection prevention, reduction, and elimination of infections.
- Actively participates in infection prevention and surveillance related to construction, repair and maintenance.
- Develops systems and policies for identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable disease. Reports appropriate infections surveillance, prevention, and control information to Quality Improvement Council, local, State, and Federal public authorities in accordance with law and regulation.
- Ensures regulatory compliance within Infection Control standards
- Participation in Employee and Hospital Safety Committee and provide guidance as necessary
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Reports notifiable conditions to Public Health as required by law
- Actively participates and attends Tri-City Infection Control committee.
- Maintains membership in APIC or SHEA.
- Participates in Safe Table Learning Collaborative for Washington State Hospital Association.
- Ensures regulatory compliance for the JC, DOH, CMS.
- Reports into NHSN as directed by regulatory bodies.
- Acts as a resource person for employee orientation, patient care issues, staff education, Medical Staff needs.
- Provides employee education.
- Participates in orientation for new hires.
- Offers infection control education to all employees annually.
- Organizes and presents in-services and continuing education based on need.
- Attends department staff meetings
- Attends educational conferences and programs to maintain awareness of current hospital infection control practices.
- Attends and takes an active part in the regional APIC chapter.
- Attends appropriate conferences on areas of infection control management.
- Adheres to health and safety policies.
- Washes hands thoroughly when handling patients, supplies or equipment.
- Abides by standard precautions regarding infection control, blood borne pathogens and hand washing.
- Properly uses containers for sharps and broken glass.
- Disposes of medical and hazardous waste appropriately.
- Cleans up spills according to policy.
- Work area testing equipment is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
- Uses appropriate PPE.
- Complies with State of Washington regarding TB, immunizations, etc.
- Adheres to policies regarding fire, fire extinguishers and exits.
