  • General Description

    Under the guidance of the Industrial Hygiene (IH) Manager, the Industrial Hygienist III provides technical direction and training to Environmental Health (EH) Specialists and has the responsibility for managing IH surveys, projects, and programs supporting aerospace activities at the NASA Kennedy Space Center Multi-User Spaceport. Work includes ensuring compliance with Federal, State, local, or NASA/USSF policy and procedures. This position may lead and supervise less experienced staff members

    How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

    • Develops and implements industrial hygiene programs to include, but not limited to, asbestos sampling; indoor air quality; confined space; sample and analysis of air contaminants associated with hazardous operations; propellant transfer and storage; exhaust ventilation systems; hearing conservation and noise hazards; heat stress; biological safety; and ergonomics.
    • Proficiency in using industrial hygiene sampling equipment and knowledge of safety standards, including OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, and ACGIH, as they relate to operations, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
    • Experience preparing comprehensive technical reports and reviews to ensure accuracy and quality.
    • Performs a wide range of industrial hygiene consultation services, which includes planning, managing, and reporting the results of exposure and risk assessments. Ensures that customers are informed of potential health and safety hazards associated with standards and regulations by providing effective recommendations for hazard mitigation.
    • Establishes project objectives and methodologies; reviews project field data; and approves final survey reports for various industrial hygiene projects.
    • Attends, chairs, and participates in various meetings and working groups to provide outreach, integrate activities, communicate issues, recommend process improvements, and resolve problems.
    • Provides Launch Emergency Operations Center industrial hygiene support for NASA, Space Force, and commercial rocket launches. Participates in launch emergency contingency planning and training.
    • Coordinates and manages industrial hygiene support to incidents, including spills, hazardous operations, launches, hurricanes, and other emergencies. Participates in center-wide contingency exercises.
    • Assigns and instructs employees engaged in technical data collection, analysis, and reporting; responds to inquiries; assists in resolving problems; and provides job training. Monitors test results, data, reports, and recommendations.
    • Assists in actively implementing company initiatives to ensure compliance with OSHA, VPP, ISO, JCAHO, and other mandated regulatory or conformance regulations/standards.
    • Performs weekly on-call duties with other staff members based on a rotating schedule.

    pecific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant science discipline
    • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience performing and/or managing Industrial Hygiene work
    • Demonstrated ability to prepare and review technical reports
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule with the potential for working off shift and weekends to support hurricanes, launches, and emergencies
    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems and lead programs/projects
    • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret written scientific and/or technical information and effectively communicate the same information verbally to subordinates and customers
    • Demonstrated ability to interpret regulatory intent applicable to assigned areas of responsibility, including OSHA and NASA requirements
    • Experience in working with customers and managing multiple projects

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with Maximo Work Control System, or similar database system.
    • Experience supervising employees.

    • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear; have sufficient manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, and other such office equipment as necessary; may occasionally move and/or lift up to 50 pounds or more with assistance, working at heights; in small and confined spaces as well as be able to wear personal protective equipment such as air purifying respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), fall protection, and encapsulated suits. Employee will be exposed to industrial equipment and vehicles, facilities without climate controls, and outdoor settings in all weather conditions, possibly for extended period of times. Specific visual abilities required by the job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
    • Work Environment: Work will be performed in a hybrid setting to include field and office work. Field work may be needed to be performed outdoors (in various weather conditions) and in the following settings: construction and demolitions sites, industrial facilities, research facilities, and laboratory facilities. Work schedule is typically a 40-hour work week, Monday – Friday. May be required to work an extended work schedule as necessary to fulfill job functions, including working irregular hours and off shift work, including weekends.
    • Travel: A low to moderate amount of travel away from office may be required, typically not beyond KSC, CCSFS or PSFB work locations.
