The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the State of Washington Workplace Safety and Health Act (WISHA) which is the state plan operation under agreement with Federal OSHA and serves state workers by helping employers and other interested parties to protect the safety and health of Washington’s workforce. This position supports the agency’s mission to “Keep Washington Safe and Working” because the work assists employers in implementing the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls, which serve to prevent, reduce, and/or eliminate workplace exposure to hazards that cause injuries and illnesses, thereby impacting the health and safety of Washington workers.
This OSHPRO 2 or 3 – Industrial Hygienist position plays an important role in achieving the mission of the DOSH Education and Outreach Program by using their advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene to create and conduct culturally relevant educational materials and trainings in both English and Spanish. This an exciting and unique opportunity help ensure employers understand how to meet safety and health requirements, general duty clauses and employee safety laws, rules and regulations, and to reduce hazards in their workplaces. The educational materials cover a variety of safety and health rules including outdoor heat, wildfire smoke, airborne contaminants, respirators, confined spaces, and other subject areas.
You will work collaboratively with internal DOSH and L&I staff, large and small employers, employees, associations, and other stakeholder groups while assisting employers in establishing and implementing safety and health programs designed to meet the Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards and in understanding their obligations under the WISH Act.

For this position, telework is permitted full time with occasional travel to a variety of events to provide presentations and training upon business needs throughout the state. The assigned duty station for this position may be in any of our service locations within the state of Washington.

- Independently create and conduct culturally relevant employer/employee occupational safety and health training programs, guidelines, presentations, workshops, website content, and publications, in the area of occupational safety and health hazards for internal and external groups in both English and Spanish.
- Lead complex industrial hygiene projects to develop occupational safety and health content for education and outreach.
- Collaborate with rule project team on specific outreach needs, independently develop resources specific to new rule development.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and promotion of safety and health management programs.
- Conduct technical research on occupational health hazards to ensure materials are up to date.
- Draft and update safety and health outreach materials for employers including but not limited to topic pages, fact sheets, hazard alerts, hazard eBulletins, FAQs, National Emphasis Programs notifications, fatality/hospitalization updates, sample programs, Emergency Temporary Standards, etc.
- Coordinate with DOSH webmaster and appropriate agency staff for publishing occupational safety and health prevention materials.
- Propose and develop technical content, in industrial hygiene topics, to be disseminated by L&I’s social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, GovDelivery, podcasts, etc.
- Research and resolve technical issues and questions about the website materials from internal and external customers.
- Translate materials from English to Spanish or Spanish to English when the need arises.
- Find Spanish language versions of valuable materials for the website from reputable Safety and Health organizations (e.g. OSHA, CA OSHA, CPWR)
- Partner with universities and community organizations to develop safety and health educational materials in English and Spanish.
- Conduct and organize workshops, seminars, conferences, and industry wide events in both English and Spanish.
- Participate in direct workplace safety and health outreach activities to provide culturally relevant safety and health prevention materials in English and Spanish relevant to specific audiences.

REQUIRED:
- Bilingual Spanish: Our top applicant will be required to pass an assessment of your ability to write and speak Spanish fluently at the advanced mid-level or higher. We do not use translating software.
- Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver license. Driving is a duty mentioned in the position description, such as an L&I inspector who drives throughout the workday to get from one location to another. Therefore, they must use a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV) in order to perform the duties and responsibilities of their position.
- Formal education and experience in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene.
- Experience and ability to evaluate industrial hygiene programs and other basic safety programs such as, but not limited to, respiratory protection, hazard communication, lead, accident prevention, and emergency response.
PLUS one of the following:
To qualify as the OSHPRO2 (OSHPRO3 In-Training):
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university involving major study in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field AND two years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience OR one year as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 1 (OSHPRO1) in DOSH.
OR
- A Master’s Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene or similar field AND one year of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience.
OR
- Six years of technician, paraprofessional or higher, paid occupational/industrial safety related experience in government, military, or public health work environment.
To qualify as the OSHPRO3:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field AND four years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience OR two years as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 2 in DOSH.
OR
- Master’s Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field AND two years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience.
OR
- Four years of full-time journey level paid occupational/industrial safety related experience in a government, military, or public health work environment.
Desired qualifications:
- Project management planning and coordinating knowledge and experience.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) granted by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
- Demonstrated experience with instructional design practices to develop safety and health related trainings in English and Spanish.
- Demonstrated experience with Rise 360, Articulate, or similar programs to develops trainings.
- Demonstrated experience with dotCMS.
