Additionally, Industrial Hygienist evaluates facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promotes maintenance of a sanitary working environment. Conducts training in environmental compliance and the handling of hazardous materials. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor/manager. The Industrial Hygienist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     • Perform supervisory duties and functions.
    • Develop a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Implementation Plan for a medical treatment facility to eliminate health hazards.
    • Perform special studies in order to participate in the development of office policy or in the new application of existing policies.
    • Schedule and conduct industrial hygiene surveys to determine compliance with current federal regulations.
    • Participate in developing controls to minimize or eliminate actual or potential health hazards in conjunction with other specialists within various military facilities.
    • Recommend control measure in order to reduce hazardous environmental conditions within the facilities.
    • Utilize appropriate equipment to determine compliance or noncompliance with current industrial hygiene and occupational health standards.

    • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
    • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

    • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.     Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

    Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    OR

    Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technicology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

    Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

    In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning, organizing, and conducting industrial hygiene or safety surveys, studies, and/or inspections to measure exposures of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

    Education

    FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
