Industrial Hygienist coordinates, plans and conducts programs to educate employees about cleanliness, safety and sanitation in the workplace. Inspects facilities and work areas to prescribes corrective actions to reduce the health risks. Being an Industrial Hygienist provides advice on methods and procedures to reduce occupational health risks. Determines measures to avoid any recurrence of accidents. Additionally, Industrial Hygienist evaluates facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promotes maintenance of a sanitary working environment. Conducts training in environmental compliance and the handling of hazardous materials. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor/manager. The Industrial Hygienist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     ENVIRONMENTAL TECH/INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

    Environmental technicians perform laboratory and field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those affecting health. Industrial hygienists analyze, identify, and measure workplace hazards or stresses that can cause sickness, impaired health, or significant discomfort in workers through chemical, physical, ergonomic, or biological exposures


    Essential Functions

    • Perform building inspections; lead inspections/risk assessments
    • Carry out industrial hygiene field measurements to verify levels of asbestos/pollution at a workplace
    • Conduct surveys and observe work conditions to identify processes which pose a risk to health of employees
    • Analyze and interpret results of an assessment to develop plans for improved work conditions
    • Update clients on the findings of an industrial assessment
    • Carry out investigations to evaluate adequacy of ventilation, lighting and other conditions required for employee safety
    • Recommend measures to ensure maximum employee protection against ionizing radiation
    • Prepare reports and maintain records of observations, contaminant analysis and recommended control
    • Carry out research to identify corrective actions for indoor air pollution
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state legislations on occupational safety
    • Attend educational programs and conferences to increase job knowledge and skill
    • Liaise with industrial health engineers and other occupational professionals to design remedial measures for hazardous conditions
    • Ensure organizational policies align with standards set by regulatory health/safety body.

    Physical Demands

    • Must be willing and able to work any shift within a twenty-four-hour period and on holidays and weekends. 
    • This position may require standing, sitting, reaching, crawling, climbing, and squatting 
    • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle with current driver’s license and proof of insurance
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to operate/wear appropriate PPE throughout the day
    • Able to withstand high and low temperatures onsite
    • Must be able to read, write and speak English
    • Must have normal hearing levels (An adult is classified as having normal hearing ability if their responses indicate they heard noises between 0 and 25 dB across the frequency range)


    Required Education, Competencies, and Experience

    • Education and Training: Bachelor’s degree in a science discipline, such as occupational health science or public health. Master’s degree in public health, environmental health, or industrial hygiene preferred. 
    • Experience: A minimum of 1 year in the industrial/environmental field or in a health and safety profession preferred
    • Analytical Skill: Ability to collect and analyze samples to identify levels of contamination
    • Communication Skills: Ability to relay safe work practices and operational procedures to clients
    • Problem-solving Skill: Must be well versed in proffering cost-effective solutions for safe and healthy work operation.
    • Knowledge: Ability to learn and understand the following regulations: Philadelphia Asbestos Control Regulation (PACR); EPA AHERA Regulation (40 CFR.763); OSHA (1926.1101); NJDEP/DOH; State of Delaware Project Monitor; NY Air Monitor
    • Technology: Ability to operate in an electronic environment (MS Suite, industry-specific software, lab equipment, etc.)
