    Position Summary

    The Prevention Specialist will work with the Prevention Manager in the coordination of services, supervise volunteers, and provide HIV client-centered counseling and needle exchange to populations at highest-risk.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities

    Support Program Director in the coordination of Counseling Testing Referral Services (CTRS) and needle exchange (NEX) for high-risk populations.

    ·         Record and maintain data related to CTRS & NEX

    ·         Manage quality assurance related to CTRS & NEX

    ·         Supervise testing site operations & NEX

    ·         Provide counseling, testing and referral services.

    Collaborate with volunteers to recruit high-risk populations into CTRS

    Provide needle exchange services and advocate for treatment and medical services for injection drug users.

    Support Volunteer Coordinator in recruitment, of volunteers and interns.

    Provide volunteer training and on-site volunteer supervision

    Attend workshops and trainings that are relevant to job responsibilities and which will encourage professional development and program growth.

    Help foster community involvement, support and effective collaboration.

    Participate in agency collaborative processes and committees.

    Present to community and partner agencies on HIV and program.

    Required Qualifications

    One-year experience working with people at risk for HIV

    Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including many evenings and some weekends.

    Comfortable discussing sex, drug use, and HIV/AIDS.

    Knowledge of the unique issues affecting high-risk communities and willingness to learn about culturally relevant interventions for gay and bisexual men, people who inject drugs and people living with HIV/AIDS.

    Willingness to work with:

    ·         Marginalized, underserved populations.

    ·         People who inject drugs.

    ·         Sex workers.

    ·         Gay/bisexual men and other men who have sex with men.

    ·         Individuals engaging in behavior considered to be high-risk for HIV.

    ·         Gay/bisexual young men and young people who inject drugs.

    Support of harm reduction philosophy and client-centered approach in prevention.

    Willingness to take on leadership positions.

    Comfortable handling safer injection and safer sex supplies.

    Familiarity using Word, Excel, Microsoft Access, and Power Point.

    Ability to travel weekly for rural locations in Coos, Curry and Douglas counties.

    Valid Oregon driver’s license, driving record sufficient to be covered by agency auto insurance policy, ability to transport self to job-related events and locations

    Ability to pass agency criminal background check


    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge of culturally relevant interventions for high risk populations

    Associates or bachelor’s degree in family and human services, public health or other related fields

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required

    ·         Repetitive use of hands such as grasping, twisting/turning of wrists, and finger dexterity necessary to perform various clerical duties such as typing, writing and maintaining files.

    ·         Frequent use of arms such as pushing/pulling to open and close drawers and cabinets.

    ·         Ability to sit for extended periods of time at assigned station.

    ·         Ability to bend and/or reach, and to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds (boxes of copy paper and/or files for storage).

    ·         Continuous clarity of vision at 20 inches or less for normal processing of work

    Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

    The duties of this job require individuals be able to work in non-traditional and community-based settings

    ·         Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends

    ·         Ability to work 5 days per week for a minimum of 40 hours per week


    Travel to other locations as necessary to complete essential job functions

    ·         Ability to transport self to job-related events and locations
