Position Overview
The Immigration Compliance Specialist for Initial Document Production reviews and analyzes application materials and supporting documentation to comply for the initial immigration document issuance for all international students admitted to the university. Interprets non-immigrant status regulations, policies and practices and advises students, faculty, and staff on the regulations and policies regarding I-20 and DS-2019 immigration document issuance. Advising students primarily happens through email. Represents the ISS unit and the University of Kansas to campus partners and departments, federal government agencies, and the international student constituency served by the unit. Analyzes data in multiple systems and dataflow to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance from application to document production. Reviews and maintains pre-arrival electronic communication in regard to document production. Reviews and provides input on admission applications to ensure sufficient data and documentation is collected on international applicants that are required for document production. Generates and ensures accuracy of immigration records for the appropriate government agencies/systems. This person will be a Designated School Official (DSO) with the Department of Homeland Security and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) with the Department of State. The U.S. government requires DSOs and AROS to have U.S. permanent residence or U.S. citizenship.
Job Description
90% Compliance and Advising-
Provides detailed assessment of individual immigration situations for compliance and immigration document eligibility through review of application and supplemental materials for newly admitted degree and non-degree seeking international students.

Interprets and applies non-immigrant and immigrant federal regulations and policies to advise prospective and admitted students and KU staff on individually appropriate immigration processes and procedures for enrollment at the university, initial entry into the U.S. or transfer of SEVIS record while within the U.S.

Processes and executes federal immigration documents for international students through the government database, Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), as appropriate.

Maintains and updates federal and university student records in SEVIS, sunapsis, and PeopleSoft, for compliance, as appropriate.

Provides compliance guidance and procedural training to KU staff and departments on immigration processes and compliance issues related to new students and pre-arrival processes.

Advises and collaborates with KU departments and admission teams on ensuring student application design, admission policies, and documentation standards meet federal compliance demands for F-1 and J-1 immigration document eligibility.

Liaises with Department of Homeland’s Security Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) in submitting correction requests and data fixes to maintain international student SEVIS records in compliance with federal policy and regulations.

Manages student lifecycle processes from post-admission through arrival, including student interaction with the iHawk portal for eform submissions and communication plans across digital and paper communication pieces.

Coordinates and assists with new student checks ins as needed, especially with special, short-term groups.

Reviews and maintains updates on student-facing forms, checklists, and communications in sunapsis.

Annually reviews, coordinates and updates cost sheets and templates needed for document production.

Assists advising current international students on matters related to F-1, J-1 and occasionally other non-immigrants status regulations including interpreting regulations, policies and practices for students, faculty and staff of the university community.

Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) for U.S. Department of Homeland Security for F-1 international students.

Serves as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) U.S. Department of State for J-1 international students.
10% Miscellaneous-
Other duties as assigned to support the mission of International Support Services.
Position Requirements
- This position begins on-site but may move to a hybrid model after incumbent successfully completes the 6-month probationary period. After successfully completing probation, incumbent may work one (1) day a week remotely based on a set departmental schedule.
- U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident to comply with Federal regulation requirements to be a DSO and ARO (to issue and sign immigration documents).
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree OR Bachelor’s degree PLUS one (1) year of relevant experience.

Attention to detail as evidenced by application materials.

Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials

Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, as evidenced through prior employment experience or college level course work
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous P/DSO or A/RO experience.

Experience with PeopleSoft or Campus Solutions.

Advanced proficiency with basic office computer systems (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).

Experience traveling or studying abroad.

Experience interacting with non-native speakers of English.

Prior work experience complying with regulations.

Prior experience implementing online forms and checklists.
