Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Job Summary:
· Prepares histologic slides from dermatology tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist and Mohs Surgeons.
Histology Technician Job Duties:
· Perform Histological technical procedures using manual and automated techniques to achieve high quality Pathology slides for review by Pathologists and Mohs Surgeons
· Prepare histological samples, high complexity grossing, embed samples, frozen section samples, sectioning staining (routine and non-routine), review samples ensure quality standards and maintain all documentation
· Preforms recuts and additional stains including PAS, Colloidal Iron, Perl’s Iron stains
· Perform immunohistochemistry stains in house as requested by Pathologist
· Troubleshoot IHC stains and Benchmark Ultra equipment needs
· Operates computerized laboratory equipment to process specimens
· Label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides and affixes coverslip to slides with automated glass coverslipper
· Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed
· Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, and slides
· Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstations
· Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines
· Maintains strict confidentiality
· Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices and procedural manuals
· Adherence to CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations
· Performs other duties as assigned
· Perform routine housekeeping duties, keep labs stocked with supplies, efficiently organize
Qualifications
Education/Licensure/Experience
· ASCP certification (HT/HTL) or registry eligible
· Skilled in Mohs techniques including but not limited to: high complexity grossing, cryoembedding, sectioning, staining, and associated trouble shooting
· Minimum of 3 years Mohs Histology experience
Knowledge/Skills/abilities:
· Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control
· Knowledge of laboratory polices and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks
· Experience with Benchmark Ultra
· Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff
· Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
· Skill in using computer programs and applications
· Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment
· Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
· Ability co communicate clearly and concisely
· Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employee, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies
