Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Pathologist and Lab Director, a technician prepares surgical, grossing area, pathology specimens, biopsies, and slides for the microscopic study of tissues by the Pathologist. The technician labels slides and enters information into automated systems and operates and gathers pertinent information for reports. The technician performs tasks under strict guidelines and regulations of the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the State of Kansas Health Department, and other regulatory agencies. Does related work as required.
Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures; good knowledge of histologic techniques; good knowledge of related laboratory terminology; skill in the operation of standard laboratory equipment and apparatus; ability to understand and follow complex technical instructions; ability to pay close attention to detail; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; familiarity with the techniques of maintaining a filing system; accuracy; good dexterity; dependability; initiative; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
