    The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Program was established to detect and recover stolen motor vehicles and stolen vehicle parts and return them to their rightful owners. The goal of the VIN program, by partnering with CID detectives and other commissioned personnel is to deter auto theft and reduce the trade of stolen vehicles and stolen major component parts in Washington State.

    Duties

    VIN Officers perform inspections of public and confidential vehicle identification numbers (VINs) to confirm vehicle identity. Inspections are conducted on all vehicles referred by the Department of Licensing (DOL) prior to the issuance of a Washington registration or Certificate of Title. In addition, the VIN Officer position assists the WSP and allied law enforcement agencies by identifying stolen vehicles and stolen vehicle parts.

    Our new teammate will be able to:

    • Perform inspections by physically crawling in or under vehicles to identify and confirm the authenticity of all VINs.
    • Use hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and manual tools to stamp and affix VIN’s and VIN Plates.
    • Enter information into appropriate databases.
    • Perform chemical processing as required.
    • Employ de-escalation strategies to deal with upset or emotional customers.
    • Notify the supervisor for any stolen vehicles or stolen vehicle parts identified within their area of responsibility.
    • Monitor facility conditions and request repairs or modification.
    • Monitor and adjust inspection schedules as required.
    • Respond to the public as needed through telephone calls, emails, and face-to-face contact.
    • Assist customers with appointment scheduling problems as necessary via the scheduling program.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Some travel is required based upon business needs, rather locally or regionally. Travel may also be necessary to attend or provide training.
    • A current resume and cover letter are required.
    Work Setting/Hazards:
    Indoor and Outdoor. Exposure to workplace hazards is limited to those commonly found in government office environments. Workplace environment typical to mechanic style garage with sometimes performing job functions outside. Exposures to acid and base chemicals, oils, solvents, and slips, trips, and falls are possible. Duties also require the use of a 10,000lbs two post vehicle lift. Hazards associated include overhead impact and falling items, crawling under vehicles and the operation of power tools.
