Position Summary:
The Assistant Stone Mason is responsible for assisting the Stone Mason in providing the daily hands-on physical labor required to keep all parks, open spaces, and public amenities, including paths, sidewalks, and hardscapes under the jurisdiction of Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) in a safe condition. The incumbent should be conscious of, sensitive to, and proactive towards making BPCA a model of sustainable practices and kept to the standards in which all those who live, work, and visit Battery Park City (BPC) have come to expect. As with all positions, this position will continually exemplify and promote the core values, mission, and culture of BPCA.
Essential Duties:

- Assist in mobilizing the hands-on technical skills, physical capabilities, tools, and supplies needed to perform masonry tasks.
- Assist in all stonework from start to completion, such as digging, carrying, cutting, laying, and cleaning stones.
- Assist in preventative maintenance and hazard corrections appropriately and timely.
- Safely and effectively operate tools and equipment such as bobcats, vehicles, wet saws, hammer drills, jackhammers, V-trowels, lump hammers, and chisels.
- Collaborate with other assistant, Stone Mason, and other staff to complete assigned tasks.
- Always maintain a high standard for safety, by timely and safely cautioning off sites for workplace and public safety, use personal protective equipment and adhere to OSHA, PESH, Federal, State and City rules and regulations.
- Keep tools, vehicles, and worksites in a clean and organized manner.
- Be available to respond to and assist in emergency situations as directed.
- Identify and report park issues and hazards appropriately and timely.
- Perform emergency and non-emergency work as assigned such as programmed and permitted events, severe weather events including snow and ice removal and flood protection measures, during and outside regular working hours.
- Always maintain professionalism, including when interacting with the public.
- Perform other duties as required within the scope of the position.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience in hands-on masonry work
- OSHA 10 Certified
- Valid US Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications, higher education and/or trainings on relevant skills
- Experience working in public settings
- Knowledge in sustainable practices, such as permeable pavers

Physical Requirements:
- Must be willing and able to perform physical labor outdoors in all types of weather
- Stand, sit and squat for long periods of time
- Perform repetitive movements
- Must be able to push, pull and lift 50 pounds
- Must have the physical ability and desire to work with materials
- Uses their hands/body to control, use, and feel objects, tools and controls
