Health and Safety Supervisor supervises the identification and remediation of hazardous workplace conditions. Oversees the measurement and sampling of hazardous materials, and any removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards. Being a Health and Safety Supervisor investigates, analyzes, and reports on any accidents or unsafe events and suggests remedial and preventative actions. Develops a safety conscious culture by providing workforce education on first aid, emergency/safety procedures and regulations. Additionally, Health and Safety Supervisor ensures all necessary records are maintained and are in compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations. Participates in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a Manager. The Health and Safety Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Health and Safety Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Your Opportunity

    Stantec is seeking an individual to provide intermediate level safety consulting services in support of a variety of clients including public and private utilities within our on our Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) team. This position will be based out of any of our California locations or at a remote location in California near a metropolitan area. This role will report to a program HSSE manager within Stantec’s Industrial Hygiene and HSSE Consulting Services team.

    Your Key Responsibilities

    • Provide health and safety consulting services in support of program and project delivery for a variety of clients.
    • Support HSSE planning and execution at various locations for a diverse range of project and service types including construction support, biological and cultural resource investigations, and environmental remediation.
    • Assist in the development of health and safety plans, risk management strategies, safe work practices and related training materials.
    • Perform pre-field preparation for on-site projects including development of health and safety documents, coordinating with Stantec project managers and subcontractors, and obtaining permits (when applicable).
    • Visit field sites and provide safety support to technical teams such as conducting tailgate health and safety meetings, performing compliance assessments, completing planned job or behavioral based safety observations, supporting safety culture, and assisting in hazard identification and control.
    • Review and track subcontractor submittals as they relate to HSSE.
    • Gather and categorize HSSE data for reporting in client and Stantec databases.
    • Prepare leading indicator safety index and incident trends analyses.
    • Support compliance with Stantec’s HSSE systems including the HSSE program manual and safe work practices, as well as local legislation.
    • Participate in near miss/incident evaluations, developing HSSE improvement opportunities, and follow-up.
    • Promote HSSE within the company with a goal of continuous improvement of HSSE culture.

    Qualifications

    Your Capabilities and Credentials

    • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
    • Certified by, or working towards, a recognized certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals or the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
    • Ability to support field teams throughout California. This role is primarily field based with 25% to 50% of the time being spent with field teams or visiting client facilities within California.
    • Knowledge and experience applying regulatory and safety requirements.
    • Experience in implementing fieldwork programs.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to remain organized and responsive to adaptive fieldwork programs and client reporting requirements.
    • Computer proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software.
    • Current driver’s license with a good driving record.
    • Current 40-hr OSHA HAZWOPER trained.
    • The ability to perform any of the following is an asset:
    • Managing utility clearance for ground disturbance activities.
    • Field sampling for asbestos or lead-based paint materials, air, soil, and/or groundwater.
    • Trained HAZWOPER Supervisor and ability to act as a site safety officer at a HAZWOPER remediation or clean-up site.
    • Act as an excavation or fall protection competent person.
    • Develop temporary traffic control plans.

    Education and Experience

    • A degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field is preferred.
    • 5 years of relevant field work experience in a health, safety, or construction role is preferred.

    Travel is required, and field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs and to hike in rough terrain to meet field teams is required. Ability to work on hazardous materials or remediation sites where respirator use is required, is expected.

    Salary Range(s):

    • $42.31 per hour - $61.35 per hour (CA, CO, WA locations only)

    The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
