Typically reports to top management. The Health Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Health Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. The Hartford is seeking an Assistant Director, Underwriting, Personal Lines (the AD) at an exciting time of once-in-a-career transformation for this business. This evolution will see underwriting processes and routines go from high-touch to low-touch, manual to automated, and legacy application-based to modern technology-enabled. The Assistant Director will join PL Underwriting’s Automated Underwriting team, while it moves along a dramatic advance forward, leveraging Insurtech, artificial intelligence (AI), a new cloud-based policy administration system, and a business that is craving innovation. The Assistant Director is a builder and will help design solutions and collaborate with teammates to execute through to realization of the benefits. Partnering closely with dedicated UW Analytics team, the AD will focus effort on ideation and creativity in underwriting the risks that come through the door. The AD will report to the Director, Underwriting and will be based in Hartford, CT; candidates remotely based within the US may also be considered. Responsibilities: Lead initiatives as part of a strategic Underwriting Transformation by leveraging solutions and technologies. Support envisioning and achieving higher underwriting effectiveness and efficiency, collaborating within a team that makes our company faster and easier to do business with Leverage data and analytics tools to deliver a frictionless quoting experience with less human touch. Most important will be to contextualize what data and services are coming from internal and external sources and apply them across the underwriting function to create value for the business. Assist in strengthening existing programs and creation of new underwriting programs will lead to improved risk selection up and down the Personal Lines business. Help to continue to evolve the UW function as the market and technologies evolve; stay abreast of trends and research in this space including Internet of Things Effectively communicate innovative change in technologies and business approach to stakeholders, developing buy-in and support Qualifications: A minimum of 5 years of experience in P&C Underwriting, Operations, Product, or other relevant experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience Track record of being data conversant; seeking truth in data and using it to bolster decision-making. Demonstrated experience with and interest in innovation; intellectually curious. Knowledgeable on emerging trends and research in this space strongly preferred. Experience with AI tools such as Computer Vision strongly preferred. Experience leading and managing a project preferred. Root Cause Problem skills Excellent communication and presentations skills Able to build and sustain strong working relationships at all levels in a large, complex, corporate environment. Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
