Health Informatics Director directs an organization's clinical biostatistics or health informatics department.     Overview

    Clinical informatics has evolved into an integral part of health care delivery and is a key factor in the selection, implementation, and evaluation of health information technology (IT). Through changes in federal legislation such as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, increased demands for technical solutions in health care have also increased demands for clinical informaticists. Informaticists provide a unique body of knowledge to lead these organizational initiatives. The value of these roles is demonstrated in improved integration of technology that provides safer, higher quality, and patient-centered care. As the use of technology in clinical practice has grown, the need for a strategic approach to these solutions has also emerged.

     

    Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, this clinical Director will work in tandem with other clinical leaders across the entire system to drive transformational strategies that meet the needs of clinicians, as well as, the vision and goals, of the organization.

     

    The role is positioned to lead critical initiatives that influence improved clinical efficiencies operational, financial, and quality outcomes across the system. Through distinctive skills that combine clinical and technical knowledge, along with expertise in informatics, the Director of Clinical Informatics has the operational and leadership skills to develop solutions to optimize organizational outcomes.



    Responsibilities

    • Utilizes the knowledge and skills of clinical practice; aligns people, processes, and technology to support evidence-based information systems that enable the delivery of efficient and effective care across the organization.
    • Utilizes effective management and leadership skills to lead a high performing Informatics team to deliver superior results.
    • Utilizes effective management and leadership skills to effect change in providers and the organization.
    • Participates as key strategic partner in providing informatics expertise in the planning and implementation of new care delivery and payment models.
    • Evaluates organizational informatics infrastructures and makes recommendations for structures that can better support the evolution of new care and payment models, as well as methods to support seamless care coordination across the care continuum.
    • Provides guidance and oversight for projects and training teams to ensure successful training and implementation.
    • Collaborates with nurse educators and management council to guide and provide input into the design, development, and dissemination of education and training.
    • Collaborates with the Medical Executive Committee, Medical Staff departments, and individual Medical Staff members to guide and provider input into the design, development and dissemination of education and training.
    • Provides consultation in the analysis of potential options for requested complex enhancements to the EHR that impact multiple departments and geographic markets.
    • Participates in inter/intra professional feasibility assessments to identify potential areas of system improvement. This includes an analysis of the current practice and process, technical options, and the potential impact of the solution options on the workflow.
    • Contributes to policy and procedure development that will be used in conjunction with the evolving use of new technologies.
    • Develops methodologies to measure and evaluate the outcome of clinical system implementations.
    • Conducts routine communication with vendors; works with vendors to tailor content to organizational needs and potential for improvements to support clinical optimization.
    • Actively participates in professional informatics organizations.
    • Disseminates findings using evidence-based methodologies from health IT evaluation work.
    • Understands emerging trends and promotes innovation in nursing, physician and provider practice through new technology.
    • Maintains alignment to support research and outcomes.

     



    Qualifications

    Experience: Minimum three (3) years of Clinical Informatics experience; five (5) years progressive management experience in the area of patient care.

    Education: Nurse with Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Nursing/Clinical Informatics. Board Certified in Nursing Informatics preferred.

    License: Active unencumbered Delaware (or compact if a nurse) state license

    Credentials

    * RN - Registered Nurse



    Education

    Nurse with Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Nursing/Clinical Informatics.

    Board Certified in Nursing Informatics preferred.



    Other Information

    Reports directly to the Chief Information Officer with a matrix to the Chief Nursing Executive and Chief Physician Executive Officer. This reporting structure serves primarily to increase cooperation and communication across traditional silos and unlock resources and talent. It serves to deliver work across the system more effectively and to be able to respond with increased flexibility.
