    Position Summary: Inpatient Medical Director, Informatics

    The Inpatient Medical Director, Informatics is an experienced and enthusiastic leader and clinician focused on the development of clinical information systems that enable the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care. The Inpatient Medical Director will serve as a specialist in applied clinical informatics and undertake key roles in project development and implementation, leadership, strategy, governance, and advocacy within their scope of responsibility. As an innovative leader, the Inpatient Medical Director partners with clinical leaders and other stakeholders to support Cleveland Clinic initiatives and programs from the IT perspective. The Inpatient Medical Director would work directly with technical staff to deliver solutions for the organization providing clinical expertise, informatics knowledge, and project leadership. 

    The Office of the CMIO is led by the Enterprise Chief Medical Information Officer and includes the Associate CMIO and Medical Directors, Informatics. The Enterprise CMIO has broad responsibility and accountability for a portfolio of clinical systems and programs across Cleveland Clinic. The Enterprise CMIO partners closely with IT leaders over the technical staff to meet Cleveland Clinic strategic technology objectives.

    The Inpatient Medical Director will have a dual reporting structure. The informatics portion of this role will report into the Office of the CMIO. This role will require continued clinical practice and for that portion of the role the Inpatient Medical Director will report to their respective clinical chair of the appropriate clinical institute(s).

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Serve as the inpatient clinical informatics expert, helping manage key risks, issues, and escalations. As a key subject matter expert within the Office of the CMIO, the Inpatient Medical Director will represent the inpatient clinical informatics needs as it relates to people, process, and technologies, while helping ensure an integrated and standardized informatics build across the enterprise where possible
    • Participate in developing and attaining mutually accepted goals for health system technology as they relate to the clinical use of the EHR with a focus on safety, quality, affordability, and standardization where possible
    • Participate in the development and execution of an informatics strategy that aligns with the overall CCF enterprise mission, vision and strategy regarding the optimal design, implementation and use of the EHR and other clinical applications
    • Collaborate across departments and sites and serve as the informatics subject matter expert for clinical caregivers in the inpatient setting and liaise with the various enterprise committees, caregivers, ITD, operational leadership, and other stakeholders regarding the optimal use of health information technology (HIT)
    • Use quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the impact of HIT solutions on clinical care processes and identify areas of opportunity to promote the effective use of technology by clinicians to improve quality of care
    • Set and oversee the execution of tactics in support of clinical content strategy across inpatient settings, including ensuring on-going communication with all key stakeholders and clinical end users.
    • As an example; the Inpatient Medical Director will work with the content and application team to assure that the appropriate orders are on the preference lists and that order panels, sets and quick list are appropriately up to date and clinically relevant
    • Incorporate key learnings attained from staff/physician input, site visits and workflow observations into design, optimization, and enhancement solutions.
    • Participate in the development and review of training materials and methodologies related to the use of the EHR. Develop a close partnership with the training and support team to help coordinate day-to-day health informatics training for inpatient providers and at-the-elbow support
    • Facilitate and lead the inpatient provider advisory group (PAG) meeting including setting the agenda, ensuring stakeholder engagement and having accountability for the outcomes of the governance group. Additionally, the Inpatient Medical Director will participate on other HIT related PAGS and key committees/meetings as needed to lend their expertise and insight to colleagues and health system partners
    • Collaborate with key operational quality, safety and analytics stakeholders to develop various structured data elements in clinical applications. Work on cross-functional teams to develop novel methods of analyzing and presenting data
    • Be knowledgeable of, and stay up to date on, clinical informatics trends, emerging technologies, experiences and approaches to ensure that the Cleveland Clinic remains in line with global trends in medicine, informatics and HIT
    • Support accreditation, audit and other compliance activities related to the clinical use of the EHR
    • Assist in gathering, managing and prioritizing clinical users' IT enhancement/change requests for appropriate resource allocation of build teams, while ensuring that correct intake and prioritization processes are followed
    • Help develop CCF's clinical care informatics expertise (specialized expertise that crosses technology and clinical workflows)
    • Participate in recruitment and retention of talented clinical informaticists and ITD staff as the need arises
    • Continuously communicates the vision, goals, and principles of the Office of the CMIO and HIT to internal and external stakeholders
    • Ensures appropriate attention to the management of change when implementing HIT
    • Provides on-call support and coverage as assigned
    • Other duties as assigned

    CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Possesses good grasp of clinical workflow in both inpatient and outpatient settings

    Education/Training/Experience

    • At least three years of involvement in clinical informatics activities, such as informatics related committees, provider advisory groups, or informatics projects. Alternatively, candidates who have completed (or are anticipated to complete) 24 months of an ACGME approved clinical informatics fellowship will be considered
    • Successful completion of a medical doctorate, internship and residency training

    Licensure

    • Ability to practice medicine in our US markets with appropriate state licensure
    • Ability to meet all requirements for medical staff appointment at the Cleveland Clinic
